Don’t need commentary for any sporting event.

I'm new to target shooting and thereby viewing matches on youtube. I started with air rifle and found that the older ones that I viewed were far more interesting, in, say, 2014. Then there were some rule changes, then there was a time when music was added (ugh), then more rule changes. All the changes I found detrimental from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with the sport. When presented well, I found it strangely addicting to watch.

The key to viewership would more likely be the technical presentation of the events. In earlier videos, they would introduce the shooter, standing at their station with their rifle. This does two things, it allows me to recognize the person, not only for how they look, but what brand of rifle they're shooting. In this format, I can be engaged by the person, rooting for FWB or the country they represent. Then they started doing long shot "walk-outs" from the side. Now, the video camera takes one position and it seems all about the scores without caring about showing the individual shooters. I was watching some recent pistol matches and there very few closeups at all. The scores weren't shown as they were shooting, but after. It was less involving. As someone who has worked in video production I kept thinking that the older productions I saw were better in terms of just allowing me to identify and root for someone. It's odd that they think mucking with the rules or adding music is going to make it more involving. The older rules made more sense to me, but recent matches seem to have gone back? I watched a ton of air rifle and got excited when .1 point won. There were people I started to recognize and root for. That's what makes it engaging. It's a visual balance of showing shooters and scoring. There's some good commentators that I've liked as well. Same with pistol. I just want to know what's going on and who's doing what. The presentation varies from place to place it seems but consistent visual production would make for more viewer interest. And I like a score tally rather than points, but that might just be me. I get that more.

This is the style I like:
Pistol:

Rifle:

What I found more coherent visually and scoring wise.

I’m a bullseye shooter who watches these matches. Can someone explain the old vs new format?

WATCH THE WORLD CUP AP-MEN FINALS - ESPECIALLY THE GOLD MEDAL SEQUENCE!

After personally scathing the new format - I believe it was modified in Cairo this week:
1. Five shots, ALL 8 finalists together
2. Five more shots, rank
3. Five shots - award 7th & 8th
4. Five shots - award 6th & 5th
5. Five shots - "award" 4th & hand-out Bronze Medal (I don't like the Bronze medal aspect . . . should be a shoot-off)
6. GOLD MEDAL SHOOT-OFF: "2 pt. Must" (like boxing's 10) - 2pts per round: 2pts best shot or 1-1 for tie.
First to 16 points = GOLD MEDAL

Up-side: Seriously watch this thru the Gold Medal shoot-off. Solely for crowd appeal - this one is a WINNER.

Downside: You could end up shooting 25 more shots @ 4:10/per; then from exactly 8 to up to 16 more for GOLD.
(i.e. literally up to a 101-shot day, not including sighters)

SPOILER ALERT,

SPOILER ALERT,

SPOILER ALERT (leave screen now) . . .

SPOILER ALERT: (There was 16 shots taken in Gold Medal shoot-off.)
Much better!

It seems they gave up and reverted back to the "old" 24 shot final:

i was watching the olympics and saw the archery system of finals, plus the dramatic mixed team pistol final from today
and i was thinking of a similar way to do the 10m individual final:

the first 8 from qualifications go into 1vs 1 matches - with points like the mixed team finals.
so first will be quarter finals where 2 by 2 battle each other. there first place will battle 8th place, second place will battle 7th place and so on
than semi final and then gold medal match (with the winners from the semifinals) and bronze medal match (with the losers from the semifinals)

advantages:
-this way, even if the scores are reset to zero, there is still some theoretical advantage in winning the qualifications
- to get gold you have to win 3 matches. more exciting to watch on TV
- with 3 stages, you are not guaranteed a medal if you win qualifications, like it;s on the mix team event now
- finals would take a whole day, so they will be shot the day after the qualifications, not the same day right after qualifications (like it was now, at the Paris 2024 olympics)

disadvantages:
-the quarter finals and semi finals could be shot at the same time, but it could be confusing following 4 separate matches. otherwise, 8 different matches will take quite a long time
