Cleaning CCI SV Ammunition

Post by BobGee »

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the excess beeswax on CCI SV ammunition other than wiping each round with mineral spirit? It is a problem in a couple of my European target pistols (primarily my TriAce). In all cases I have scrubbed the chambers with a bronze .25 cal brush and Break-Free CLP but after shooting a few rounds I start to get stove pipes due to extraction issues. Doesn’t happen with oiled European ammunition. Seems to me that the excessive beeswax is the problem.

I know that US ammunition is allegedly “fatter” than European but the CIP and SAAMI specs for cartridges are identical and chamber dims are also virtually the same. I’ve considered D Moore's chamber reamer solution but would prefer to try the “clean” CCI solution first.

I have tried heating the ammunition in an oven set to 40degC (104degF) for an hour then raised to 45degC (113degF) for another hour as not much was happening. Reluctant to go any higher for fear of damaging the ammunition.

PS Just seen the thread on barrel cleaning (“Yet another cleaning thread” in Bullseye forum) which reflects this problem: http://targettalk.org/viewtopic.php?t=66204

I invert 50 rounds and wipe the heads on a micro fiber towel
