Far enough back that you are not touching the rear sight. Far enough forward that you can see light around the front sight.
The real key here is alignment. Make sure the cheekpiece supports your head so that your eye is naturally aligned with both (aligned) sights and your neck is comfortable. Check it in position by closing your eyes, taking a deep relaxing breath, then opening your eyes.
You can also have a "coach" block your view of the sights as you get in position. When that block is removed, honestly check your head position.

It varys slightly with each person. Have your coach moved the sight slightly toward and away from you while you are in position. You will find a spot that looks best to you.
