Just hold the target so your finger covers the 4.

Dude.
I am like shooting for 3 years.. and I still get some occasional 4s if I do not concentrate.
That is the name of the game.

Ah arr… you need the Pistol Shooters book of Excuses, filled with 100’s of unique reasons.
One for every occasion…..

Re: "don’t count your chickens before they hatch"
I've found that one suffices for almost every occasion:
"I suck at this game."
Once upon a time, in the running for a medal, I planted a solid 2 on my final string (because I suck at this game). A few spaces down the line, the guy who was positioned to displace me managed to shoot - get this - a 2 in his final string, which let me sneak in. I've always been grateful for other shooters having the same excuse as me.
Re: "don’t count your chickens before they hatch"
The best excuse I ever heard was from a rifle shooter. He was competing in the US National Matches (Camp Perry), and was well ahead of all the other competitors (in rifle, that can be only 3 or 4 points...). He was shooting standing, and his last shot was at 6:00, out in the white. That immediately dropped him out of the running.
When asked what happened, all he would ever says was "My arches fell."

"there was a bug on the target . . . "
Re: "don’t count your chickens before they hatch"
I've definitely had bug problems on free pistol targets. I take a shot, and a black spot appears WAY out in the white, decidedly not where I called it. On a good day, it will wander around & I know not to panic...

Same here in free pistol.
Fire a shot,check it, a 3.
Then while watching the shot walks across to the 4 ring.
Then 5 ring and flies off.
The real shot was in the lower circle of the nunber 8, high.
