cheap wind flags

I'm thinking about getting some 3/8" dowels, sharpening them in a pencil sharpener as the stake. Then using surveyors flagging with a grommet and a pushpin to make up the flag. The dowels might not hold up too long depending on how hard the ground is, but they would cost about a buck apiece. Any other ideas?

We use 1/2" electrical metal conduit (EMT). Available at home depot etc. for under $6 for 10 feet. Cut to desired length, we cut in fourths. The tubing goes into the ground easily. A long bolt with washer and nut will drop down the center and then can pivot without falling out. We also use florescent flagging tape for the flag.

Dance streams, which can be found on Amazon, cut to length, an arrow with fletching removed and the nock drilled to the size of the handle on the streamer. Some archery shops will give you old arrows. Arrows have to be hollow.

I make my own flags and use a 1/2" x 1/2" wooden dowel w/ an oversize hole in the top for the flag arm to rotate freely.

IMHO, the light surveying tape is too sensitive and becomes almost useless in moderate winds.

About the hanger type wind flag.
Does the hanger material reach to the ground? It does look like in the top pic, but in the bottom pic it does not look like it will.

Actually it usually rests lower. In the picture it is resting on the dirt in tube. Being hollow the tubes collect dirt and have to be cleaned out occasionally.
