Rhino Spotting Scopes - any info?

Post by Fortitudo Dei »

Hi Target Talkers,
I'm looking around for a decent spotting scope after getting sick of using low-grade, small diameter Chinese cheapies. It will primarily be used for spotting .22 holes at 25m and occasionally at 50m. I've seen a few scopes with 20-60x zoom eyepieces and 80mm exit diameters, but the build quality of those I can afford doesn’t inspire me. However, I have recently come across a scope at my local dealer's for about the same price which looks as if it was built the way scopes used to be built. The brand is Rhino, it's a fixed 22x 60mm, with a straight sided metal tube, angled eyepiece, and it comes with a heavy solid bench tripod and a metal clamp to lock the scope to the tripod. It looks and feels like a heavy-duty piece of gear. However I can't any info on the web about these scopes and the dealer isn't much use either. Is this a brand which has disappeared? There is no country of origin on the scope - any ideas as to where this was manufactured or the quality of the optics?
All replies appreciated

Fortitudo: You did not say where you are but by the description it sounds like a scope that was distributed in the US by Champions Choice until recently. This scope I am thinking about had a grey cylindrical body, at the back the angled head piece was black, several eyepieces were available but the most common one was 22x. It was focused by turning the eyepiece. Aluminum caps on both the eyepiece and objective. The scope was painted with like a wrinkle paint. I believe this scope was made in Japan. We have several of them at our club and I know of quite a few others who have had them and found them to be very well made with good optics. I can't find any pictures on the web at the moment but I think that I even saw the same scope in an anschutz advert. at one time. I have had the same problem recently. I went to buy a scope for my daughter to use and after getting it home I found I could not see 22 caliber holes at 50yds.
