Can someone explain the legitimacy of the free pistol cover being used by a competitor in the recently held ISSF junior world championships.

Rule 8.4.3.4 b

"Hand covers for 50m Pistols are permitted, providing they do not cover the wrist."

Thank you David. I have never seen such a cover in use however I am still at a loss to understand its purpose or benefit.

Keeping your shooting hand warm if you are shooting in a cold/cool environment? Of if you have circulation problems that makes your shooting hand so cold that you find it difficult to shoot well with a very light trigger?

Thanks...and I understand that hand covers are allowed in 50 m. pistol however the cover shown looks like it covers the hand and the pistol !
Was it that cold in Suhl Ger. on June 26 ?

I haven't got a clue what's going on inside this hand puppet setup but still am amazed it could be classified as legal.

Who knows.

Anyway my interpretation of the issf rule provided by David is that hand covering is allowed...but I haven't had luck finding any mention of covering the pistol as well ?

I live in New England, and we used to have outdoor free pistol matches as late as November. The hand covers help a LOT. Arnie Vitarbo's wife used to make them for a variety of free pistols, with holes in appropriate places for cocking levers & such. They were basically fleece bags that went over the pistol grip and hand. He got them blessed by the rules folks (which is why that rule exists), although originally, they had soft knit elastic cuffs. Too easy to hide stiffeners, I guess, so now the cuffs are illegal.

I use one of these regularly when shooting on our indoor range in the winter and on the 50 metre range early in the year. It makes a big difference to preventing your trigger finger and hand getting too cold. Sometimes even put a small hand warmer in the glove between details to keep things cosy.

Hi John
Who or where did you buy the pistol glove in the UK? I shoot outdoor all the year round and use a Zippo hand warmer in the winter but the glove/cover would be a great addition.
