IZH-46M

Post by Hyoung »

Hi, I'm in the market for a reasonably priced air pistol and the IZH 46 and the M has caught my eye. I am wondering what kind of equipment I would need to carve away the grip (I have no experience in carving). Is the grip usable without carving? Also, how reliable is the pistol in terms of velocity and accuracy? How long is it before it needs to be resealed and how hard and how much is the reseal kit? Any comment would be very helpful, Thank you in advance.

Hello, I would suggest using the gun for a while before modifying the grip, to see how YOU like the feel and how well it performs in YOUR hand. I used a Dremel with a 1/4" drum sander attached to a flex shaft and with the help of Don Nygord tip on how to modify your grip at http://www.nygord precision.com/notes.htm . Finish sand by hand with 200g and used True oil sanding sealer and 4 coats True oil. If you like a hi-gloss mirror finish sand last coat with 2000g and hand buff with Meguiar’s swirl remover 2.0 .The grip felt to big for MY hand and after about 20 rounds it would start to hurt right above the middle finger second joint. After modifying pressure was even with an improved natural point of aim and score average. As for long-term velocity and accuracy and seal life, I will have to see.

A #2 pencil and a dremel tool with an abrasive drum is the only way to do it accurately and quickly.
Is the grip usable without carving?
I used mine for a year before modifying - fairly large hands. The grip is more comfortable now, and my objective in modifying them was to move the NPA up and to the right, at which I was successful. As to whether that will increase my scores remains to be seen.
Also, how reliable is the pistol in terms of velocity and accuracy?
Mine hasn't failed a single shot, and is always on call.
How long is it before it needs to be resealed and how hard and how much is the reseal kit?
After ~5K rounds I have no need to reseal. A set of replacement seals come with the pistol.
Any comment would be very helpful, Thank you in advance.
These are my comments, FWIW. You're welcome.

IZH-46

Post by G Ross »

I have both a IZH-46 and an IZH -46M. The barrel seal went on the IZH- 46 when I had well over 15K pellets through it. I bought a IZH-46M from Pilkguns as a replacement and set the IZH-46 aside to be repaired on a rainy day. When the rainy day came io did not get it finished and did not get back to it dur to workload. I finally gave it to warren at the last Roanoke show in pieces and asked him to see wht he could do with it. I got it back two weeks later in perfict working order for $35 and shipping. If I experience the same problem again I'll send it off to Warren right away.
The grips took a little gitting used to but I am having good results now.

Be careful with the dremel

Post by Jerry LeVan »

Be careful using a dremel, it is a lot easier to take wood off than to add it back!
When you start getting "close" get a wood dowel and wrap some sandpaper around the dowel and ease off the wood a bit at a time.
Finally make your changes slowly....

FWIW, I have found the 46 to be everything Warren told me it would be....an excellent paper-puncher. Accurate (shooting into the 90's) and with a reliable and adequate trigger. I worked on the grip with Dremel type tool, files, rasps and sandpaper over quite a period of time. The results manifested a truly comfortable and stable stock. I have since moved on to an LP1 and have done some slight modifications to the very good Morini grips. Makes a difference.
As to the seals etc. ...I have nearly 20,000 pellets through mine with nary a problem. Although it's idle now, I would not hesitate to recommend it. FWIW. I can email pics of my grip modifications if you want....let me know.

Just get one! Seriously, I still read every post about the 46's. I own several other guns, but somehow the 46's just work for me. I disliked the stock grip, but they build the grip big enough to get creative with.
For the money (under 500.00) I cannot think of any airpistol as accurate and fun. I have let several new shooters try mine. Not one of them has shot the gun without asking if I would sell it to them.

Thanks all,
Finish sand by hand with 220g and used True oil sanding sealer and about 4 coats True oil. If you like a hi-gloss mirror finish sand last coat with 1000-2000g try not to go to deep, you may hit wood. If so you need to reapply true oil on this area over again. Hand buff (rub) with Meguiar’s swirl remover 2.0 . Some shooter perfure a satain finish and stippling(texturing).
The camera, Olympus C-404 zoom.

ADDED NOTE

Re: IZH-46M

Post by ADDED NOTE »

The modification of my izh has gone through three stages and properly one more soon. Need to remove a little more on the inside cup area were my hand meets the grip. Stippling also maybe? So, patients are a virtue here…………so carefully sloooowly will yield a more satisfactory result IMO. Also carving on the bottom inside needs to be done with added concern if your hand is on the small-medium size. The palm rest has a mortise for the rest inner metal bar, careful not to carve through this!
