2016 National Match schedule is out

It seems to me with all of the millions of dollars the NRA has at their disposal, that they should be able to run the National Matches at a loss if necessary, to help promote the sport, and future NRA supporters/donors.

The National Matches are run at a net loss. Dennis Willing explained that the overhead costs in Bristol are much lower than Camp Perry and that was part of the reason for keeping small bore there.

Except a CMP official said that they paid for the lion's share of the cost at Perry, so that doesn't exactly jive.

Sure, but why bother to poll the competitors if they were just going to disregard the results and make the decision based on money?

Christie Sewell from the CMP noted that the CMP PAYS the NRA $60,000 to help them run the matches as well as pays for the porta potties and many other amenities.

Brad Donoho from the CMP also noted that the OHNG does rent each building daily. For example, the Theater where the awards are run costs a whopping $58 per day for use (Only used 2-3 times). Compare that to the awards ceremony for Smallbore at the Das Dutchman Essenhaus. EDIT: I estimate the catered event for up to 100 people costs about $15 per head for three nights thats $1,500*3=$4500. They charged the non competitors $25 per head so lets say there are 30*25=750*3=$2250. Total cost was probably closer to $2,000-2,500. This does not include the rental of the room for the evening.

I also learned from a fellow coach that the NRA Foundation pays for the National Matches anyways. The matches were never intended to make money.

The NRA not supporting the Smallbore National Matches is kind of like Hollywood not supporting the Academy Awards if it didn't make a profit. The Smallbore National Matches should be a showcase of competitive shooting. If the NRA won't support it, why should the rest of the public support the legitimacy of competitive shooting.

I'm guessing that the NRA has an annual income on the order of perhaps 200 million dollars, what with 5 million memberships, fundraisers, donations, etc. And we are quibbling over well less than $50,000 for what should be the pride of the orginization?

Perhaps the NRA considers Smallbore the "little league" of competitive shooting, and wants to focus on the "big boys" in High Power and Pistol?

The Smallbore National Matches should be a showcase of competitive shooting. If the NRA won't support it, why should the rest of the public support the legitimacy of competitive shooting.

They don't want to focus on Competitive shooting at all. I suspect the managers and employees at the NRA Competition division are as clueless, and self interested as the good old boy board at USA shooting.

To some extent that happens in every big organization, however the non profits rarely find themselves disciplined by the bottom line.


The NRA will attempt to put enough money into competitions to keep a dwindling minority quiet, until they can see a clear road, to doing away with it entirely.

Haha, clearly you have never been to the Highpower or Long Range Nationals!
