Post let-off movement

Post by Gnr527 »

I suspect this has been covered before but cant locate it.

I have been letting my breathing take me vertically up onto the 'bull' to shot release and suspect, in the perfect world, recoil should take the foresight vertically up and back down to 'bull'.

But it doesnt - it goes up left and back down right to 'bull' - is this indicative of bad position/balance/or what?

Should it be corrected? - how?

Oops PRONE

TIA

Try shooting during the natural respiratory pause (holding no breath in your lungs), and see if you have the same result. If so, you may have too much sling tension (if right handed).

Do the shots go where you expect them to go (in the middle) despite this?

Personally, I've long suspected that this may be something that we worry too much about and that the vast majority of the recoil/muzzle flip happens after the bullet has left the barrel.

That said, I've been experimenting with the balance of my rifle and am finding that adding weight on the forend forward of the handstop is giving me a nicely controlled recoil. Too much weight gets painful after a time - so it's a compromise.
Without the weight I occasionally get a sideways component to the flip and the shot would be less than perfect.

Early days but the initial results are promising.

A higher position might achieve the same change of balance (but not without multiple alterations - sling, handstop, buttplate, cheekpiece).

Ken.
