Gamo sight question

Post by kilowhiskey »

The Gamo sight on my son's 887 seems to be experiencing a lot of hysteresis (it's sticking and not moving repeatably). What's the best approach for cleaning and lubing it? I'm guessing there's probably some plastic components within it, so dunking it in conventional solvents is probably out.

I call what you are experiencing "backlash".

You have to remember that the Gamo is an "inexpensive" sight ... what $65 or so now compared to a precision rifle sights starting at $400 or so.

This is common with these sights after a few years of heavy use ... i.e a shooter actually sighting in their gun properly ... and frequently.

1) You can try and clean it up is isopropyl alcohol ... run the EL & Windage over to their limits and spray some alcohol onto the threads ... shake vigerously to help dry off and then the knobs to the other limits and repeat .... this may help, but you'll be doing it again soon.

2) Folks always ask me why my kids sorta forcefully tap their Gamos after an adjustment ... this is to help settle out the backlash ... works pretty good ... especially if you have a rear sight "blinder" that may be rubbing the diopter & sight housing.

3) After playing with #1 & #2 and just getting fed up, I usually just of get a new sight and put it on and put the "less accurate" sights on my beginner guns that they shoot off the bench. I always have a few beginners try and crank the knobs way past where they are meant to go, so these sights are useful tools to show them that they can indeed be broken and some care needs to be taken, and I can do that in a calm manner)

These things have a lot of cast pot metal parts and they just wear out. Sorry

I would like to up grade the sights on my son 888 when I change the stock to a 887 stock. Is the daisy sight The one I want? He shoots sporter. Also Is there an up grade to the front sight.

The part numbers that you want to order are:
#5996 Avanti Rear Sight
#5901 Avanti Front Sight ASSY (887 type, BBl weight & FS globe assy)

When I order these, I like to make sure that I specify the 887 front sight assy's ... a few times Daisy has shipped the 888 types.

I'd recommend that you order an extra front sight assy so that you can use it as a BBL weight as the shooter gets older. You might have to drill out some wood from the butt of the stock as sometimes this can make the gun go an oz or two over weight (7-1/2lbs)
