Rifle balance in prone?

Post by Guest_66 »

Hi

Any ideas where the balance point of the rifle should be in prone? At the handstop, or a bit behind that, in the middle of the palm?
Does it matter in prone by the way?

The trend is towards lighter, shorter barrels. Smallbore prone is a grueling discipline whether it's International or NRA and barrel weight/balance point is really a matter of your own stamina and strength. If you as fresh and focused for the last 10 shots as you were for the first, you've probably got the balance right.

I tend to think the balance point point should ideally be around the handstop, perhaps a little shorter in. But as to where to balance the rifle, it depends on your build. If you're a tall shooter you'll have the handstop near the front end of the stock and it's impossible to get the balance point there. I'm short which on my gun makes the rifle, slightly nose heavy - which I would suggest is the least desirable option, but until I change my stock, there's nothing much I can do about it.
