Ans 9003 and Sound Moderators

Post by steve b. »

Ok, bear with me on this, but...

To keep up with my smallbore off-hand training, I shoot am 9003 in the house about 5 nights a week. The floor for my improv 10m range is pergo and the noise is quite loud bouncing off the floors and walls (pellets make it to the trap...)

The wife is very tollerant and doesn't complain (saint Jan is what my friends call her), but i have to wear ear plugs. I know it's bothersome.

So, last night I machined out a collar in the shop and installed my .22rf moderator on the air rifle, and OMG, it sounds like I'm dry firing the rifle. It's amazing. Now, the question, by influencing the expelling air, is there a potential of messing up the rifle's inner workings?

I had to adjust the rotation of the moderator for accuracy, and change the weights, but it's now shooting just as good as before, but almost completely silent.

Thanks.

I just siliconed in a rubber faucet washer at the end of the barrel sleeve. It cut down the sound by about 50%. I should install another one a few inches down the tube coupled with the end washer. You can also install a old school womans hair curler to break up the sound waves. The 9003 was the loudest air gun I ever owned before the washer install.

I know you saw My reply on RFC, but for the benefit of others, use of traditional design suppressors is very common on PCP air rifles, both ISU style rifles and field designs.

Some of these are integral, some are baffled shrouds, some are set screw mounted cans, and some are baffles inserted into an existing counterbore.

Obviously, you're using a tax paid NFA suppressor. There may be some legal risk for those using unregistered non integral add-ons.

Of some note, the Benjamin Marauder is supplied with an integral shroud which is said to be quite efficient in reducing report.
