Does anyone know if in the CMP rapid fire you only have 30sec to get into position as well as fire 5 rounds, or can you get into position before time starts?

All the positions in all stages are described starting at the bottom of page 9.

In summary ... you start the prone and kneeling/sitting rapid fire from a standing position. BTW, it's 30 sec for a bolt action and only 25 with a semi-auto. Time includes dropping down into position.

If they are using a semi-auto have them practice clearing the action in the event of misfire or a stovepipe .... there are no alibis allowed in this event.

We do a lot of our practice at 50ft on B-40 pistol targets .... in these sessions I'm not looking at scores, but getting the pressure of the short timelines worked into the shooters brains.

There is really no pressure during the slow fire stages. We start the kids on these to learn what can happen to their rifles (especially SAs) and work out how to clear any issues .... calmly ... and continue on. Teaching them not to get stressed and fall apart in one of these situations is pretty important. If a team shows up, and has not practiced, it's almost an assured meltdown

From what I've seen of the results in the past, the smallbore rifle contest is a tough one .... many good shooters.

One more Question:

Does the trigger on the NRA 3-P match have to be 3lbs? It is not mentioned in the 4-H rules and I can't tell if the NRA rule 3.1 or 3.2 is used?

In the NRA 3-P match it is specifically an "Any Gun" match .... no trigger limitations. They quote Rule 3.2

NRA Silhouette is noted as "not subject to accedental discharge.

Only CMP Rimfire Sporter has a minimum pull - 3lbs, if you have a 10/22 and an aftermarket trigger kit, most probably you are below 3lbs. You can purchase hammers from Numrich and stone them down to your choosing ... I like to set ours at 3-1/4 to 3-1/2 lbs

Yes, the 3.2 rule used in 3-P does cause some controversy. But my feeling is that they already penalize the Air rifle shooters by not offering a precision event .... this is the precision event for SBR and the kids that show up, for the most part, know the gear, how to use it, have practiced (for a long time), so yes, they will score higher than someone who brings grandpa's closet queen. Having good gear is an advantage, but only if you know how to use it. Ive seen folks here in NM at our state match with M12's trying to shoot w/o slings .... they are worn out pretty quick.
