Re: What happens when the front aperture is too big?
Many years ago at our National Meeting I thought conditions merited a slightly larger foresight element than my usual 3.8 - so I put in a 4.0 and it looked HUGE when I was sighting in. But I persevered and shot pretty well on that detail - afterwards I looked a bit closer at the element and it was a...

Re: Eye Relief and aiming accuracy
So, if parallax and eye relief aren't a big deal, why isn't everybody shooting 10.9's??? We all should be able to just look through the rear thingee and line up the front thingee on the target, right?!?!? One of my exercises is to shoot with iron sights from a benchrest rig with SCATT attached to s...

Re: Eye Relief and aiming accuracy
John - I read the article on Parallax Suppression a few years ago and I think it's broadly correct BUT.... I think it only applies to the centre region of the peephole (which I've referred to as the "sweet spot". If you start looking through the outer portion of the rear aperture, the iris...

Re: Eye Relief and aiming accuracy
Hi Bryan, since Tim invoked my name I thought I might update my thoughts on this subject. Firstly, in my experience, eye relief depends on the ambient light level - shooting outdoors requires less eye relief than shooting indoors if you want to retain a consistent sight picture. I guess this is to d...

Re: How often to clean my bloop tube?
The deposits are quite tough to remove once they have hardened - I had a tube where I had to ream out the crud with a bit of copper pipe and a hammer... Now I push a bit of cloth (several bits actually) through once I've finished shooting, you still get some build up but it's not as heavy. More impo...

Re: Personalising your Precise Stock
I use vinyl wrap to jazz up my stock. As Patriot says - easy to remove if you want to sell it on or fancy a change. Cheap too. Personally I like brushed aluminium effect (ice red or antique gold). Carbon fibre was cool for a while but gloss white just looked like uPVC double glazing... YMMV. Hydro d...

Re: Riser Blocks and accuracy
I would have thought that the risk from high riser blocks is that any tremor in the hold, however slight, will be magnified because the sights will now be further away from the axis of the barrel. That might account for looser groups. Again I thought the same but in relation to the cant angle error...

...and then we are onto the subject of eye relief, ambient light levels and the resulting dilation of your pupil.
Eyes are tricky little things.

Re: Sight setup for 50m prone
In addition to the excellent advice above : I believe that the size of the rear iris is somewhat dependent on the nature of your eye - a small aperture will give better depth of field allowing the foresight and target to both appear sharper BUT if your eyes are less than perfect you will get greater...

Re: Xgun bolt firing pin cracked sleeve
I had this on my older 'X' rifle - it cracked all the way through.
It shot fine like that for many years.
Anschutz replaced it with a 19 series sleeve (I think) for a nominal fee and it still shoots fine.

Re: Commercial .22 test rigs
Why go to so much effort if the mount is different from what's used in competition. If you stop the rifle from rotating up as it recoils the results will be invalid. Another that measured vibration and compensation learned that clamping the barrel changed the patterns for a rifle with the receiver ...

Re: Optical puzzle
Bad luck. I sometimes have a feeling something similar is happening with me (eye exam imminent). I'd go with option 1 but investigate option 2. A crossover sight or offsets are a lot cheaper and easier than changing your whole setup and relearning your technique. Not a perfect solution but... Regard...

Re: Walther kk200
As far as adding to the pistol grip - I have used Milliput in the past.
Others I know have had success with car body filler or polymorph plastic.
I also tried Fimo modelling clay but it tends to shrink slightly as it cures and doesn't stick (or it didn't for me).

4. Single Position Finals. The Final is increased from 20 to 24 shots. The first two 3-shot series are increased to 5-shot series. The 5-shot series have 250-second time limits. Eliminations begin after the 12th shot and continue after every two shots until the gold and silver medal winners are dec...

Re: New ISSF Rules - Partial Summary
I think the problem with the currently available variable dioptre irises is that they magnify to varying degrees.
Wasn't there some rumor of an adjustable dioptre that WASN'T magnifying undergoing ISSF approval - or was I dreaming?

Re: Sight Picture
Hi Kim I'll second what Tim has said - the lens you have been prescribed is probably a bit too strong. For comparison, I am a similar age to you and my distance vision is still pretty much perfect but I now need +1.5 reading glasses for the computer (and +2.0 for closer work). My shooting lens is sm...

Martin, have you tried the little plastic insert that screws in the front of the sensor/camera?Martin H wrote:I have seen very "jagged" traces when using the MX-02 in strong sunlight at 50m too.
Here that has sorted that problem on very bright days.

Re: Buy a tuner or not?
As I’ve said before I don’t understand how there can be multiple harmonies going on in the barrel. A tuning fork will always ring with the same note no matter how hard you hit it, so how can there be multiple harmonies in a barrel? Hi Bryan, when you excite a bar or string with a sharp (transient) ...

Re: Buy a tuner or not?
Thanks for that explanation Tony, since I first heard of PRX I've been looking for a rational explanation of the phenomenon and what you just posted corresponds pretty much to what I'd concluded (with reservations). With a tube of the correct length, a standing (acoustic/pressure) wave might be set ...
