Barrel Swaps etc.

Many who have used and worked on these rifles recommend against swapping the original barrel unless it is ruined or a mismatch to the receiver from the beginning and no longer returnable. It is very hard to find a clearly better barrel. Even when a "better" barrel is used, about a fifth or...

Difference

The main difference faced is for the future, if you ever want to change the stock to one of the metal ones. The two rifles require different stocks that do not interchange, except for the Keppeler stocks which can fit either, with a different adapter plate. Otherwise, probably no detectable differen...

Rifle sources

I was thinking about offering some used Anschutz .22 target rifles late this year or early next year. Probably the model 54, and some of the 1xxx and 2xxx series. Possibly some older Walther as well, at lower prices. Please email me if you have any particular preferences in those models, or wish an ...

Lists

Yes, there is another lists that applies to the US in general, not imports from the USA into CA. It is from ATF, derived from the State Department approval list. This list from ATF and US Dept State is for NEW imports, and does not apply to (limit or restrict) guns already in the USA.

Current status

The prior comments are completely correct. The gun is not on the permitted list. So whether the application states MC-55, Mu-55 or MTs-55 will not matter.

MC, MЦ, MTs, and MU transliteration

One word of caution on MC and MЦ transliteration. While the correct phoneme combination is close to Ts, the transliteration (parallel alphabet letter, independent of pronunciation) that ATF uses for this gun is ц=c, following standard transliteration practices of the 1960s. Applying for an import pe...

GSP grips

The older OSP GSP grips all were adjustable for the OEM grips. The other Walthers like the PP etc, generally not. Most of the fixed grips are aftermarket on the older guns.

Was there a different case for the Hammerli issued 160 Special, or did they use the standard 160 carrying case?

trigger guard hole

Good to hear it worked. The one thing to be careful about is the lubrication. If the trigger "stiffens" between the 1st and 10th or 20th shot, lubrication is needed. The hole in the trigger guard was added around sn 208xxx The older guns do not have one, unless you have a Hammerli with a w...

Side screw

The side screw really is just a coarse adjustment for the trigger pull weight, which can be used as a quick change device if desired (and was the reason it was added). The "correct" position is with the red dot on the screw aligned with the dot on the frame. However, it also needs to be at...

.38 etc

The historically accurate comment, "The .38 WC was used as a self defense round for a while - I think the thinking was that the WC tip delivered more of the energy to the target than a pass-through shot. With target loads, the muzzle energy is going to be lower than in a +P load, but it's still...

Target guns and what is not really self defense

The first use I can recall of target guns for what might nor might not be called 'self defense' was in the mid 1800s when smaller bore target rifles were applied for military use by riflemen due to their accuracy. The OSS used the High Standard guns extensively, usually with the integral silencer, b...

Cross-reference: ammunition, aim

The info in this Olympic pistol post may be useful for bullseye. Please note, some have felt the base post is worthless or counterproductive, at least for olympic pistol use. The ammunition sorting methods described in the posting can be tested for your purposes with a trial group of 10 cartridges o...

The following post may have some useful ideas on aim for those with significant shoulder, elbow or wrist problems, or thoracic spine pathology. http://www.targettalk.org/viewtopic.php?t=37963 Please note, some consider this method totally idiotic or counterproductive. Here are the relevant excerpts:...

GSP price

Market price on these guns can be quite variable. The NIB condition one I sold recently was in the $900 range with SN matched case etc. Others varied from $350 to $650 depending on cosmetics and number of included magazines. The 2 stage triggers are drop in fits, but the safety will not block their ...

Ammuniton accuracy. free pistol, handgun, rifle

Some very interesting comments on ammunition selection for a variety of guns have appeared on some TT discussions. These were particularly interesting from the point of view of people who don't use these guns in competition, and for whom a 600 free pistol score is at the beginner level and will not ...
