horsehockey?
Ok, then I withdraw my comment on our Irish friend, he told me that no one wears plugs where he shoots when I asked if he had hearing protection. I insist on juniors shooters wearing them on our range as well as glasses. Adults are required by range rule to do so also. Adults are not required to wea...

Seeing as I'm the last post here before this remark, I'll field an answer. You, sir, have misconstrued the US Constitution. The First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of spee...

The beauty of the Ruger MKII or III it that it will take you well beyond entry level scores with some practice and the vast number of upgrades you can make to it - like anatomical grips. Don't be silly. No serious shooter does that in international shooting, though maybe you see it in NRA bullseye....

Re: air rifle and hearing
I coached a shooter from Trinity College in Dublin this summer and he does not wear hearing protection with a .22 normally either. Most of the shooters on his squad do not wear protection on air or .22. (With apologies to Verizon :) Can you hear me now? ... (Louder) CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? ... (Louder...

.22 rifle with subsonic ammo is pretty quiet outside. Indoors on a large range it's pretty quiet too. I find the noise distracting so I use ear muffs. I insist on eye and ear protection on my home range when coaching juniors with .22's. Air rifles are shot alongside the juniors with 22's so it is a ...

air rifle and hearing
Though I generally wear hearing protection air rifle shooting to minimize distractions, if I'm alone on a range I don't. I coached a shooter from Trinity College in Dublin this summer and he does not wear hearing protection with a .22 normally either. Most of the shooters on his squad do not wear pr...

torque
The most important aspect in rifle shooting is consistency. Assuming you lot test ammo for grouping in your rifle, using correct torque settings every time you shoot will introduce another known quantity. The more known quantities you deal with, the less guessing and hoping you have to do. A main ad...

sighters
The importance of sighters cannot be over emphasized in rifle shooting. Every range is different, temps and humidity, lighting, target height, shooter orientation, even your own varying body weight come into play. Something that pistol shooters don't deal with is different zero for different positio...

Never shot a bench and don't benchrest shoot either unless I'm testing loads. I did shoot the ventilation duct at a local club during a match though. Apparently I was loading in the kneeling position and popped of a round when the bolt closed. I really don't know how I managed to do it. I've tried t...

palm rest
Not to sound snobbish here, but have you looked at your position? Lot's of times, in the search for stability, I've found shooters that extend the palm rest too far down. This is self defeating as it lessens the bone support needed for true stability. Moving your feet a little farther apart or addin...

If I may be so bold as to suggest a name, Doctor Johnson at Eye Health Services in Weymouth Mass. I use him and the attached optical shop and have been delighted with the level of service.

biathlon and other stuff
I just hosted a Biathlon in Braintree. Lot's of fun, good time. The winner had a corrected time of 23:20 for a 5KM event. I will be organizing more. For adult smallbore shooters, next summer I am planning to host at Braintree the open section of Bay Sate Games Smallbore Rifle. Leading up to this I w...

Triggers & such
If we make the assumption that this is an older Anschutz Rifle, perhaps a trigger upgrade to the 5018 model is in order. If it is a newer model, Anschutz may have a kit for conversion of the heavier pull to the lighter pull trigger. Shaving metal may not be a good idea if you are affecting sear enga...

Braintree, Massachusetts Biathlon Aug 26, 2006 9AM
On Saturday Aug 26 Braintree Rifle & Pistol are hosting a Biathlon match. It will be open to anyone over 11 that can show safe handling of a .22 before the match/race. The entire course I've laid out is a 1k loop on club property. It goes over paved, grass and rough sufaces with strong uphill an...
