Gorgeous! I might suggest Waterlox as a finish. You can make it as shiny or matte as you choose; just matter of fine sanding or buffing at the end. Try it on the tool handles. If you don't like it a little sanding will enable you to go with something else. I agree that the nut needs to be countersun...

Thank you for the photos; particularly the one with all of the drill holes. I had not understood previously an earlier comment about using your drill. Now I understand how you are able "hog" out so much material at different angles.
