It is not a problem. Some people will enjoy Recreational Olympic shooting and some people will enjoy Competitive Olympic shooting Ignoring the point that that's the deathknell for the sport right there, there is the point you didn't address: throw away the core principals of the sport And there's a...

At this point some people will finally realize what they need to do. I need to work to earn money to pay bills. I need to look after my family. I need air, water, food and shelter. I don't need to take on financial debt, spend more time in the gym, and throw away the core principals of the sport I ...

Y'know, if we're just going to embrace this spectacle model instead of the sport model, some nice folks have already got a working idea for biathlon that we could adopt:

Re: source?
Is there a better way to get there, given that building on the past is an apparently mandatory component of the process? I have some ideas on that... As I’ve said many times before in many places, the problem with being a spectator of ISSF shooting is not that it’s boring; it’s that you can’t see i...

Re: source?
Don't write rules that nobody understands and that seem to ban every firearm made since the late 80s! How about waiting until we read the rule, not just a summary of it, before jumping to conclusions. How about releasing the rules that they've had several years to work on? Or answering email querie...

Re: source?
The ISSF are damned if they do and they're damned if they don't. I don't think that's the case. I think they're just making bad decisions and being damned for it. Look, all of these changes are justified by wanting to make the sport more exciting and accessible to the general public, right? Except ...

You may be not thinking of the FT i am. Typically a 12 ft-lb version of a 10m target rifle carrying a 3lb scope on top, shot outdoors in 3 positions. Often the addition of custom stocks and other items mean these weigh in 15lb+. Ah, I know what you're talking about now. But that makes even less sen...

They're not exactly that heavy. FT rigs are much more weighty. I don't remember ever seeing anyone shoot an F-class or FT rifle from the standing position though... or even prone with a sling for that matter. Target Rifle maybe, but they're much lighter... Sparks, 4 hours a day 4 days a week is fin...

It's an air rifle for me, but similar takedown - remove the buttplate, the cheekpiece, the air cylinder and the sights, then everything goes into slots cut in the foam. It's survived a few trips abroad now, but when I change rifle, I'll be opting for one of the newer stocks that you can take down ev...

Many athletes in sports with far more physical demands than ours (rowers, high jumpers, pole vaulters, weight lifter, shot put discus, hammer throwers, etc) spend four or more hours a day training for years on end without serious chronic problems. Perhaps because as athletes they have developed the...

The fact of the matter is that, in the U.S., the general public isn't interested in competitive shooting, therefore no one supports it financially. It's always been that way and I don't see it changing in the future. As a general rule, even folks on gun-related websites don't have an interest in co...

You really don't think you could safely shoot a gun naked? lol Clothing is not for safety in competitive shooting is what I was pointing out. I think you are misunderstanding Sparks, he isn't talking about acute injuries, but long term exposure to inferior posture during quiet standing. The lower b...

As we are discussing safety issues, and remembering that we still don't know what the new rules are going to say in detail , can anyone explain to me why there is a need for standing rifle shooters to wear boots that come above the ankle bone. Is there a safety issue or, as I suspect, is it merely ...

Speaking for Ireland, our shooters are what you'd call broke :D We have two or three supported shooters in clay pigeon who'd get up to a maximum of 30k (euros) in grants, but they're the exception (and they've a few world championships medals in Trap in their cupboards). Also, 30k won't fund a full ...

This is exactly that, an anecdote, repeated often enough that many accept it as fact. The plural of anecdote not being data, I'm not saying that it's the sole proof of the point. I'm just saying that it's a well-known illustration of the issues involved. If you want the actual studies, there are en...
