2004 PISTOL, RIFLE and RUNNING TARGET
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Sandra Uptagrafft, of Longmont, Colo., and Sgt. John Ennis, of the Army Marksmanship Unit, both walked away from the 2004 USA Shooting National Championships with their second gold medal of the match Monday at the Fort Benning pistol ranges.
Uptagrafft, who shoots for the U.S. Navy Reserve, won the women’s air pistol event on Friday and then just three days later swept the women’s sport pistol competition. Ennis, the 2004 men’s free pistol National Champion, turned around to immediately take charge in men’s air.
In 25m sport pistol, Uptagrafft, the reigning National Champion in this event, grabbed a demanding lead from the very beginning. She finished the first day with more than a 10-point lead over her competition, and by the end of the second day, was 25 points ahead of the runner-up. Uptagrafft finished with an overall score of 1,241.2.
Nora Stoyanova (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) was the second-place finisher, completing the event with a 1,215.4 total score. In third place was Jennifer Trickett, just two points off of Stoyanova.
In men’s air pistol, the competition was much more intense. Ennis posted a 572 after both days, and finished with a 1,241.4 total tally. Staff Sgt. Adam Holloway slid safely into the second spot just over two points behind Ennis with a 1,239.0. For third place, Rob Mango made a big final run to upset last years’ National Champion, John Zurek, of Phoenix, Ariz.
Going into the finals, Zurek had a commanding 13-point lead on Mango, which would usually be enough to secure that position. But Zurek, who had a very uncharacteristic final score of 85.9, finished with the worst finals score of the group. Mango, however, took full advantage and did hit a 99.1 to make up the difference and grab the coveted third place finish at the 2004 National Championships.
