Buddy Duvall from USA Shooting spends time at the 2021 SASP Nationals. With 2,000 entries into 8 disciplines this was a great opportunity to introduce our athletes to Olympic shooting events.

USA Shooting commissioned a full scale bank of 5 steel targets built to International Rapid Fire specifications with smaller steel targets representing the 9.7 ring in the center. This gave all the athletes the chance to experience the timing of shooting the Olympic event in the required 8-second, 6-second, 4-second format on familiar steel targets. The steel targets provide instant feedback when hit and the inner 9.7 sounds different than the outer bull when it rings. This feature adds a very spectator friendly element because the audience understands the outcome instantly.
This partnership is a good fit for both organizations. The Scholastic Action Shooting Program has thousands of youth athletes registered for this year.. The 25 m IRF event is somewhat similar to our stage called "Focus" but the IRF event requires much more precision. The times recorded are eerie similar. Our beginners shoot Focus in ~8-seconds, our intermediates shoot in ~6-seconds and our advanced Shooters shoot Focus in well under 4-seconds. Our top competitors shoot Focus in the 2.1 - 2.4 second range. The rhythm is familiar and makes a good bridge for our athletes to the Olympic sports.
Another reason this is a great fit is that our existing equipment is well suited to simulate the IRF event. Our Ruger (most popular rimfire handgun in SASP) target pistols are a good starting point and the timing requirements can be managed with any shot timer set to par time.
