Strength & Fitness

What do people do for strength & fitness regimens? I am trying to drop weight and improve strength for general health, but I'm also sure that being less top-heavy and having better muscle endurance will help a lot with shooting. I've been back on the wagon as far as my diet goes -- I had lost 65 pounds last year but had put some of it back on this Summer -- and am starting to get back into walking and a little bit of light lifting. My shoulders have always been super weak so I'm trying to do more shoulder lifts with low weight & high reps.

I also pulled out my old hand gripper with individual springs for each finger and bought a wrist exerciser gyroscope, so I've been using that a lot while at work on my computer.

PirateJohn, thanks for sharing!

I'm sure your above post should open the floodgates of useless info & hilarious insults as we debate your future in precision shooting.

Let the wise-cracks begin . . . Enjoy!

My future is this -- I wanna keep doing it no matter how badly I suck.

A while ago I got into team handball after watching it in the 2008 Olympics. I learned there was a club near me in Southern California so I joined. At the time, a lot of people were just getting into the sport because of the Olympics, so the club had a glut of new members and hosted a Summer tournament on the beach.

A representative from USA Handball came, and invited us to a tryout for the national team the following January. During a break, I sat next to him. I was horribly overweight, but I said, "you know what, I'm going to go to your tryout."

So I spent a lot of time working on myself. I joined a running team, played a lot with the club, and lost a ton of weight. So when I went to the tryout, I didn't make the team, but I made a good showing.

Sadly, a lot of life has happened in the intervening years and I put a bunch of weight back on, mainly because when I get depressed, food becomes my drug of choice. Now I've found another goal in shooting, since I'm too damn old for handball now, and even if I suck at it, the amount of work I'm putting into it is going to help me achieve other goals, too, and give me something to keep looking forward to.

Pirate John,

Hey man, welcome to competition! Sometimes the truth is the funniest insult of all!

Old, shaky, decrepit, blind, injured, cross-eyed . . . then we go shoot against the youngsters & beat 'em.

Postscript: Of course, after competiton they go out dancing & we can't remember where our favorite pillow is . . . .

Mountain biking has worked for me, probably not ideal for posture though which I've always had issues with
Good for
- Cardio fitness
- Shoulder strength
- Grip strength
- Legs, back, torso

Also I've done a lot of construction work over the years.

I find a rowing machine works well for cardio & general strength. It's low impact, easy on the knees, and works your grip, all while being weather agnostic.

I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and running, along with some body weight stuff. I don't usually shoot very well on the days I also had martial arts practice, but my hold and my standing stability are much improved once I've recovered.

Could we be done with all references to beer/whiskey/alcohol?

This forum is for competitive shooters. This forum is for athletes. This forum is for precision.

Alcohol got a world-class USA pistol athlete kicked-out of the 2021 Olympics.

I don't see any place for alcoholism or alcoholics posting their drivel here; save it for your AA meetings.

Go train.

There's nothing better to get the gunpowder and lead out of your throat, once the shooting competition are over.

Saude!

WHY? Why is there "gunpowder and lead . . . " in YOUR THROAT?

See thread on psychiatric drugs.

Always wear a mask to indoor gun ranges, keeps the gunpowder and lead out of your throat. Also is a good way to make new friends in the US.

I can't wear a mask to the range. My scores mysteriously plummet.
