Three reasons come to mind:
1. Rover's influence, inflating the value of SSPs beyond their objective worth.
2. The engraved autograph under the RH grip - Johann Sebastian Feinwerkbau.
3. The successful bidder is barking mad.

It can't be MY influence, William. What is my lone voice against the multitudinous hordes here, shrilly crying about their feebleness, age-induced ailments, and the destruction of their scalpel-like concentration by their furious exertions.

I can only suppose it is your third reason: the dumb fucker is bat-shit crazy.

Gents, now hold your horses... FWB 100/102/103's were not cheap, ranging from $1.100-$1.400 in the 90's. Do the math with the US inflation calculator:

However, the buyer of the 102, did overpay...

"Overpay," you think?

Yup, what do you think would be a "fair" price?...

If you think that FWB sold for a lot, go back to eBay and look at what happens. Search for Feinwerkbau (and maybe add "103" to it). We will see if the one which just sold has any influence on the value of the next one. The winning bidder has just (at least for the moment) established the new "fair price" for that pistol.

The textbook definition of "fair price" is what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. That contains within it absence of coercion, market distortion, etc. Unfortunately, Economics as a discipline makes no provision for when the willing buyer is a lunatic.

I have noticed this disturbing trend of buyers willing to pay more than $100.00 for a pistol. Nutty! But we have become a nation of plinkers.

Could you possibly mean "a nation of plonkers"?
