Toilet paper or pistol ammunition?

Post by Jerome »

So, is pistol ammunition (including .177 pellets) flying-off the shelves around the world at the moment?

There has been a big rush in Australia on some guns & ammunition.

And the authorities here in Australian have temporarily prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition in some states.

They may have had visions of Mad Max type mobs ransacking gunshops, and then running amok in some weird post-apocalyptic nightmare scenario.

Just another case of people not knowing what they are doing when they have a knee-jerk reaction to someones theoretical "bright idea".

Justification for the suspension of firearms and ammo sales is based on the supposed effects of long-term isolation, eg:
1. Domestic violence will increase, thus more firearms will be used against family members, and,
2. Depression will lead to suicide.

In Australia, the use of firearms in each of these cases (in "normal" times) is negligible.
In each of these supposed situations, firearms and ammunition will be in the house, as only registered shooters (and criminals) will possess them.
Therefore the restriction will have no effect on the hypothetical situation.

I think a lot of people are genuinely concerned that there will be a prolonged shortage of new firearms and ammunition; just as many are stripping supermarket shelves and hoarding food in the belief that there won't be enough for everyone. Meanwhile, I'd be surprised to learn that the average target or sporting shooter is stocking-up on arms and ammunition in order to protect his (or her) stash of toilet paper and bags of pasta!
