Timothy Sherry (Fort Benning, Ga.) of the Army Marksmanship Unit won Friday’s finals of the men’s 3x40 smallbore rifle competition to secure his top position at the USA Shooting Rifle-Pistol Fall Selection, 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Part 1 in Fort Benning, Georgia. Sherry had a two-day total of 2359, with the scores from this competition being added to the scores from the second phase of the trials taking place in March of next year to determine which athletes will represent the U.S. in Tokyo.

Patrick Sunderman (Farmington, Minn.), also of the Army Marksmanship Unit, placed fifth in the finals, but his total of 2349 was good enough to move into second place in the standings. In third place in the overall standings is top junior competitor and Air Force Academy athlete Peter Fiori, Jr. (Lebanon, N.J.). Fiori, Jr. was second to Sherry in the finals and finished with a total score of 2344.

Finishing just out of the top three with identical scores of 2339 were 2018 World Championship bronze medalist and Army Marksmanship Unit athlete Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) and Nick Mowrer (Colorado Springs, Colo.). If Mowrer were to take one of the quotas for the 3x40 rifle he would also be eligible to compete in rapid fire pistol due to the fact that he has an MQS in that event and that there is an open slot.

In men’s rapid fire pistol, the standings remained unchanged from day one, with 18-year-old Henry Leverett (Bainbridge, Ga.) taking the top spot with a total score of 1159. Three-time rapid fire pistol Olympian Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed second with 1153 points, followed by Brian Kim (Los Angeles, Calif.), a recent Coast Guard graduate and previous Bridge Junior Shooting Club member under In Kim, with a total score of 1141.
