First Day of Men’s Rifle-Pistol Olympic Trials Sees Timothy Sherry and Henry Leverett in Lead
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 3, 2019)
Timothy Sherry (Fort Benning, Ga.) of the Army Marksmanship Unit moved into a three-point lead on Thursday during the opening day of the men’s 3x40 rifle competition at the USA Shooting Rifle-Pistol Fall Selection, 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Part 1 in Fort Benning, Georgia. The scores from this competition will be added to the scores from the second phase of the trials taking place in March of next year to determine which athletes will represent the U.S. in Tokyo.

Coming off an eighth-place finish at last month’s Rio World Cup, Sherry posted a first-day total of 1175. Top junior competitor Peter Fiori, Jr. (Lebanon, N.J.) of the Air Force Academy sits in second place heading into Friday’s final day with 1172 points. Another Army Marksmanship Unit soldier, Patrick Sunderman (Farmington, Minn.), rounds out the top three with a first-day total of 1169.

Trailing Sunderman by just one point are Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) and Jared Eddy (Midland, Ga.). McPhail, of the Army Marksmanship Unit, was a bronze medalist at the 2018 World Championships. Eddy, with only one junior world cup match under his belt, showed he can compete in the open category with a first-day total of 1168.

In men’s rapid fire pistol, 18-year-old Henry Leverett (Bainbridge, Ga.) moved into the lead with an opening-round score of 577. Leverett, the 2018 Junior World Championship silver medalist, picked up the rapid fire quota at the Beijing World Cup. Two points behind Leverett sits three-time rapid fire pistol Olympian Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Brian Kim (Los Angeles, Calif.), a recent Coast Guard graduate and previous Bridge Junior Shooting Club member under In Kim, rounds out the top three with a total score of 571.

Competition for both the men’s 3x40 rifle and men’s rapid fire pistol concludes on Friday.
