Ginny Thrasher and Alexis Lagan Rise to Top of Leaderboards after Opening Phase of Smallbore Olympic Trials
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 2, 2019)
Picking up where she left off four years ago, 2016 Olympic gold medalist Ginny Thrasher (Springfield, Va.) leads the women’s rifle 3x40 smallbore competition after the opening phase of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in Fort Benning, Georgia. Although she finished fourth in the finals, Thrasher’s two-day total of 2345 bested the rest of the field of 41 competitors. The scores from this competition will be added to the scores from the second phase of the trials taking place in March of 2020 to determine which athletes will represent the U.S. at the Tokyo Summer Games.

Coming off a championship senior season at Texas Christian University, Rachel Garner (Celina, Texas) stepped up to take second place in Wednesday’s finals as well as the second quota position heading into the second phase of the trials process with a total of 2342. Rounding out the top three in the women’s smallbore rifle competition was Mary Tucker (Sarasota, Fla.) with a score of 2338. Tucker, from the University of Kentucky, is fresh off a finals performance at the World Cup in Rio and finished third in today’s finals putting herself in a great position for part two of the trials in March.

Alexis Lagan (Boulder City, Nev.) started off Wednesday’s women’s sport pistol final in seventh position but came back to win both the final and overall competition with a two-day total of 1164. Nine points back is 2012 Olympian Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.), followed by 14-year-old Ada Korkhin (Brookline, Mass.) who competed in her first world cups this year and will enter phase two of the Olympic Trials with a score of 1140.

Malori Brown (China Spring, Texas) took the gold medal in the junior women’s rifle 3x40 smallbore competition ahead of Katie Zaun (Buffalo, N.D.) and Emily Stith (Jacksonville, Fla.) of the Army Marksmanship Unit.

The final two days of competition at Fort Benning will feature the men’s rapid fire pistol and rifle 3x40 smallbore events.
