Browning and Mein Lead Heading Into Final Day of Shotgun Olympic Trials
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 12, 2019)
Heading into Friday’s final day of trap at the Shotgun Fall Selection, 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Kerrville, Texas, Kayle Browning (Greenbrier, Ark.) enjoys a three-point lead in the women’s competition while Derrick Mein (Paola, Kan.) has opened up a four-target lead on the men’s side.
Browning entered Thursday’s round of 75 targets tied atop the women’s leaderboard with Ashley Carroll (Solvang, Calif.), but found herself alone in front after hitting 71 of the 75 targets on the day. Carroll’s total of 67 on Thursday bumped her down to fourth place. Meanwhile, perfect final rounds by Rachel Tozier (Pattonsburg, Mo.) and Madelynn Bernau (Waterford, Wis.) have those two competitors deadlocked in second place, three points back of Browning.
Mein increased his advantage in the men’s trap competition to four points, thanks to a perfect second round on Thursday as he hit 72 out of 75 targets. Jumping up from a fourth-place tie to take over sole possession of second place was Brian Burrows (Fallbrook, Calif.). Burrows had a perfect opening round on Thursday and had just one miss in the other two rounds for a total of 73. Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) sits four points behind Burrows in third place entering the final day.
Friday’s final day of individual trap competition will consist of 50 targets before the open finals featuring the top six athletes in the men’s and women’s standings. Finals winners will receive three points added to their score, while the second- and third-place finishers will receive two points and one point, respectively.
