I have owned a number of APs through the years, from single stroke pneumatics to CO2s to PSPs.
None have been totally troublefree, but a couple arer pretty close:

- An old CO2 pistol, a Walther CPM-1. No leaks, noe broken parts, no need to replace O-rings yet. Accuracy is great.

- An old Feinwerkbau C25. Have owned more C-25s, at present I use the vented barrel version. No leaks, no O-rings replaced. Has evolved some variability in trigger let-off force, though.

Did they make their APs more sturdy and reliable back then?
With my PCPs, I have had some issues with most of them. Leaks, broken parts, mal-functioning parts, O-rings giving up their faiths prematurely, etc.

I have a 1 owner 777 my wife bought me new when they came out so long ago I cant remember not having it. It has never had a hiccup. All it asks of me is a bit of oil on the felt piston wiper. I've dusted it off again and sboot it next to my P44. It has to be the most reliable underrated air pistol Ive ever shot. I used to complain about how nose heavy it was, but the funny thing is that my P44 weight and balance setup with the added slider has evolved over time to feel remarkably like the 777. My only mod to it is a bit of added skateboard tape on tbe grip which has always been a bit too smoothe for me.......

The best air pistol that will give you the least problems would be spring piston pistols (such as the FWB 65), they are virtually bombproof.

PCP’s probably have more problems than their CO2 counterparts, due to the compressed air that is held at a much higher pressure than CO2, causing more wear and tear of seals, springs, and parts.

As for sturdiness, I do feel that the older AP’s tend to be more clunkier than the newer pistols, this may be a sign that they were built better.

I'll go with Kevin on this one. The FWB65 series is both accurate and powerful, but are not even thought of when someone is looking for a gun. They are also easier to operate than some wusses will tell you.

My favorite is my Walther LPM1...no maintenance and made of steel. It uses the same long proven basis as some of the other Walthers. Cheap to repair, too. There is another in my club...also loved.
