What kind of test group sizes does one expect to get out of a quality air pistol at 10 meters? Are the groups as tight as that of an air rifle?

Assuming you have a quality match grade air pistol, you should see a single hole only slightly larger than the diameter of the pellet for a five shot group and definitely no larger than one and one-half times the diameter of the pellet. Most all match grade air pistols come with a test target with a pellet size marked on the target. There is no need to do extensive testing to see which pellet your gun "likes". Bulk tins of 500 pellets from any of the MATCH GRADE pellet makers (RWS, H&N, Vogel, Daisy, Crossman) do just fine.

The groups are so good you need not even ask.
Myself and the guys I shoot with are all using RWS Basic.

Man, what a great collection. We should make it a sticky and required reading for anyone who asks a pellet question (Yeah, the whole damn thing!)

Life is too short to shoot bad ammo or drink bad wine.
Too lots one for practice and one for match.

How do you feel about older whiskey, younger women, faster horses, and more money?

John, you and I are on the same page. I hope you can handle that stuff better than me.

He was an old philosopher, of course.
Like many here.

It has been said that the difference between philosophy and graffiti is the word "fock."

John I will take them in order:
1. Old whisky - yes
2. Younger women - Well I married one younger than I am a few decades ago. Think I will stick with her.
3. Faster horses - Never played the ponies
4. More Money - Well DUH! I could buy more guns and ammo.

Quite a while ago I payed a visit to M.Vogel in Germany to have my pistol tested and select the 'best' pellet.
M.Vogel himself confirmed that only the top 20-30
world class shooters would benefit from 'selected' pellets.
So follow the advice from Rover and Bickar: choose a well known brand pellet and train, shoot matches. Those are efforts and money well spent and results will come.
And don't forget: enjoy your shooting!
Good luck
Guy

Ah, Guy, you're too mellow. You need to slap down these young guys so they will never be competitive with us oldies.
We can snicker while they sit back and sulk.

Too mellow? Maybe, but let the starters find out for themselves.
Someone who intends to take up ISSF style shooting will need all the encouragement and support he can get.
Regards.

This makes me think of my grand-dads warning:
"Beware of a horse back side and a woman's front side!"
I found out about the horse, so I figured he was right about the rest! ;-)
