I just thought I'd mention, for those in the area and not aware that it exists, that there is a new permanant biathlon range at Northstar Ski Resort now. My wife and I are now hooked on this sport and just completed our first biathlon ( the 10th Mountain Division Biathlon ).
They have more clinics and certification to use the range on open range days - check it out !!

Craig,
I think I remember you and your wife from the race last week (how many biathlon couples with rifles are there?)
I was the German guy without a rifle. Talked to you briefly.
Great race, lots of fun. I have a call in to Altius and I am looking for a practice range here in Marin.

Yes, that was us - great meeting you, and that was a great group of folks.
Altius has some great biathlon stuff. If they should be out of Izhmash rifles, MT guns is where we bought ours -

See you at the biathlon range !! Craig

thanks for the link. Did not know them but have been in touch w/ Altius.
I still need to find a range around here in Marin/Sonoma where I can go practice.
What kind of targets do you bring to the range and how do you set up?
Any more races planed this year?

It looks like there will be more biathlon range days added too for those that are interested - keep an eye on the Northstar website which I assume will be updated -

According to me Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. There is also a warm weather variant called Summer Biathlon which replaces skiing with running. In a typical Winter race, a Biathlete is required to ski with his or her rifle over a set distance to a shooting range, where five shots at five knockdown targets 50 m down range are taken from prone position. Depending on the format, either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed for missed shots. Again penalties are assessed for missed shots. The biathlete then skiis a final loop to complete the race.
