What sort of spotting scope would I need to resolve .30ish holes in paper at up to 300 meters ?
I have an excellent 3p rifle, a Tanner in 7.5x55 I wanted to try out with a little more determination and less legging.
Its seems to me its going to take a good 'scope to be able to make out holes at 300 m and I was hoping I might find an inexpensive unit to do the job. Looked at a Maksutov 38-115x 70mm.
Any advice welcome.

There is no ordinary scope regardless of expense that you can always see holes at 300 yards. Things like mirage because of heat and wind come into play. I use a Kowa 20-60 80 millimeter and sometimes I can see shots in the white at 600 but a day like that is extremely rare. I can count on seeing shots at 200 all the time but that is about it. There are old military spotting scopes that are about 4 feet long that I understand are the best however they are cumbersome and I would guess, very expensive. I have seen them but never looked through one. You need to just buy the best you can afford or justify because buying a cheaper scope and then eventually coming around to a more expensive one is foolish but that advice seems to cover almost everything. Like in most everything you get what you pay for.

When I posted this question, I was more hoping against hope that affordable optics will allow me to see holes at 300 m.
However, not all is possibly lost; Just a couple of hours ago I was discussing this issue at our local club and one guy kinda looked at me with a smirk and said why dont you use a video cam ?
Being involved as I am with electronic stuff I am giving serious consideration to to setting up a small wireless cam that will transmit a useable picture of the target onto a small LCD screen.
I might even have most of the parts in my junk boxes !

A bit of a wild idea really, but If I can rig up the system to be practical and portable than perhaps it might save me some legwork especially while experimenting and calibration.

At the Benchrest club in Missouri they have cameras at 600 yards as far as I have heard but I have never used it. Perhaps someone here that has used it could chime in. It has to be the best idea for testing loads because weather conditions are too variable to count on a scope working when you want it to.

Indeed there are wireless video cameras and receivers that will do the job. The camera and transmitter sit downrange, looking at your target. The 2.4 GHz signal is sent back to the shooters receiver and displayed on a monitor. Security systems vendors sell "Wireless Video", such as:
