CMP Western Games – A Great Place to Vacation, Meet Old Friends and Shoot in a Friendly Atmosphere - PHOENIX, ARIZONA – No matter where you shoot, everyone’s got their own description of their weather. Texans call their seasons drought, flood, blizzard and twister. At Camp Perry they say “if you don’t like the weather, wait ‘til the next relay.” Mark Twain said “climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.” And of course in Arizona you can fry eggs on the hood of your car, but they say “yep it’s hot, but it’s a dry heat.” But in all fairness to the good folks of Arizona, October is a great month to visit and meet up with friends at the shooting range. They say Montana is Big Sky Country, but Arizona has horizons that stretch all four compass points too.

A series of Squad Designated Marksman articles are posted on Oklahoma City's examiner.com. Kent Stonecipher began helping to train these classes in 2004 as a civilian consultant working with the United States Army Reserve's Small Arms Readiness Group, SARG, and for the last few years have worked as a volunteer with the Civilian Marksmanship Program assisting the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's training. Kent has been involved with training well over a thousand soldiers to become SDM in that time period. Here's a summary and link to his recent articles:

Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training Day 5 - Day five of the Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training began clear and cool with a light breeze out of the north. Easily the best day for training we've had. The soldiers were once again divided into two relays by the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit instructors. While one relay placed the targets in their carriers in the pits the other relay took their places on the 500 yard firing line. A radio tower was set up today to maintain communication with range control. As soon as the range was allowed to go hot road guards were placed, targets were run up and the firing line was given ten minutes to fire ten shots prone with scores being recorded in the pits. Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training Day After Action Report - The most recent Squad Designated Marksman class at Ft. Hood is complete. These U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit instructors prepared another excellent week of training. My fellow Civilian Marksmanship Program volunteers, who I've known for years and who I have the utmost confidence in, provided assistance based on years of training and competitive shooting experience. It's always interesting to see the lesson plan that has been prepared for each class based on the facilities available and the instructor's background experience. This class was more of a traditional marksmanship training than any I've been associated with recently. I'm sure that was greatly influenced by the known distance range facilities available at Ft. Hood. Read the complete article at http://www.examiner.com/firearms-in-okl ... ion-report.

The 2010 CMP Annual Report is posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/Annual_Report10.pdf. During the past fiscal year, the CMP not only provided firearm safety and marksmanship training programs to fulfill its mission, but it continued to support major Armed Services marksmanship training endeavors with staff and volunteer expertise and funding. 2010 was an outstanding year of accomplishment and growth for the Corporation; we trust these successes are reflected in the data, records and illustrations in our annual report.

2010 Gary Anderson Invitational - You and your shooters are cordially invited to participate in the 2010 Gary Anderson Invitational, to be hosted at both the CMP Competition Center South in Anniston, Alabama, and at the CMP Competition Center North at Camp Perry, Ohio on 3 - 4 December. The match is a junior three-position air rifle match that is a sanctioned CMP Cup Match and an outstanding competition opportunity for every school or junior club shooting team.

This event is named after the former Director of the Civilian Marksmanship Gary Anderson, whose influence and guidance has significantly impacted the success of three-position air rifle shooting. We look forward to seeing you at the match! View the complete program at http://www.odcmp.com/3P/GAI2010.pdf or register online at http://
clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInfo.cgi?matchID=6011. We sincerely hope you and your team will join us in Anniston or at Camp Perry in December for a great competition.

2011 U. S. Army Junior Open Air Rifle Championship - The U. S. Army Junior Open Air Rifle Championship is open to all junior shooting organizations that have school-age juniors as members or enrollees (high school seniors or below). Participating organizations can be junior clubs, school teams, 4-H clubs, JROTC units (Army, Air Force, Marine Corps or Navy) or other organizations with eligible junior members. The Championship features two separate air rifle events, a sporter class three-position event and a precision class standing event. Because these are different types of events, all competitors may fire the State Championship postal competition in either or both events. Teams may compete in the National Championship in only one class, however. Entries or requests for official targets may be submitted to the CMP anytime between 4 October 2010 and 10 December 2010. Entries must be made on-line at http://
clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchTeamRegistration.cgi?
matchID=6224&prevPage=nothing&nextPage=teamEntry. Entry fees for the 2011 competition are $5.00 per competitor, with no additional charge for team entries. The low entry fee is intended to encourage more junior clubs and teams to enter more juniors in the postal phase of this competition.
