A series of Squad Designated Marksman articles are posted on Oklahoma City's examiner.com. Kent Stonecipher began helping to train these classes in 2004 as a civilian consultant working with the United States Army Reserve's Small Arms Readiness Group, SARG, and for the last few years have worked as a volunteer with the Civilian Marksmanship Program assisting the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's training. Kent has been involved with training well over a thousand soldiers to become SDM in that time period. Here's a summary and link to his recent articles:

Squad Designated Marksman Class at the Kansas National Guard Training After Action Report - The recently completed Squad Designated Marksman Class for the Kansas National Guard at Salina, Kansas was as productive as any I've ever been involved with. Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training Prelude - Well, here we go again. Another Squad Designated Marksman class being conducted by the U. S. Army Marksmanship Training Unit and the Civilian Marksmanship Program is about to kick off and it's like old home week. We'll be training this week on Range 44 Delta at North Ft. Hood. This is the range where I first began SDM training for the U. S. Army Reserve Small Arms Readiness Group (SARG). This is a 500 yard Known Distance (KD) range, the type with which most civilian High Power Rifle shooters are familiar. Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training Day 1 - Day one of Squad Designated Marksman training at Ft. Hood began as expected. We're staying just off of North Fort and the classrooms are at South Fort. The first order of business for me was to drive around Ft. Hood to get a visitor's pass to enter the base. Ft. Hood's a big place. I drove 300 miles yesterday from my home for the training. Today I added about 90 more miles to get the visitor's pass, attend the classroom training and make my way back to the range we'll be using this week. Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training Day 2 - Day two of the Ft. Hood Squad Designated Marksman training began with the soldiers being divided into two relays. One headed to the pits to pull targets and the other took up standing positions at the 100 yard line. Target shooting type standing positions were demonstrated before firing began and the students were encouraged to experiment with stances, holds and use of the hasty sling that had been covered in the classroom. Relay one began by firing single shots at the silhouette targets in the target carriers. After each shot the targets were pulled down and the hole in the target was marked with a spotting disc and raised back up for the location of the hit to be observed at the firing line and the next shot to be fired. New Manufacture M1 Gas Trap Kits Now Available - Newly-manufactured, fully-shootable gas trap front end kits for the M1 Garand rifle are now available again after a 71 year of cessation of production, according to Rat Worx (Research and Testing Worx, Inc.) of Mt. Morris, Illinois. According to their Web site (www.ratworxusa.com), these gas trap parts are manufactured from the original 1937-40 U.S. Government drawings. Each part is fully interchangeable with 1937-40 production components. The kit contains a gas cylinder, gas plug, front sight, front hand guard lipped ferrule, and new stacking swivel and gas plug screws. The gas cylinder, gas plug and front sights have an “R” stamped on them to discourage dishonest people from passing them off as originals. The barrels are marked with the manufacturer’s initials, the drawing number and date of manufacture. Rat Worx is a facility which makes prototypes and manufactures small runs of machined product, for the automotive and firearm industry. For more information, log onto their Web site or call them toll-free at (800) 675-6906.
