Larger apertures, Lyman 17a & similar Refield front sigh

Post by PaulB »

Has anyone had any luck at having larger diameter apertures, preferably in plastic, made for the Lyman 17a or similar Refield front sights? These sights were the most common on rifles like the Remington Models 513T, 540XR and 541 as well as the Mossbergs 144 and 44US. The largest size that comes with the sight is still too small so I would like to obtain some larger ones. I have tried to drill out some of the ones that I have, both in orange plastic and black metal, without any success.

Sorry for the typos (twice) - obviously meant "Redfield", not Refield

I've had some success with drilling out the metal inserts. You must firmly tape them to a small block of woo before drilling. The duct tape holds the inser so the inside doesn't twist when using a drill press.
