New Jersey Junior is Awarded the John C. Garand Handicap Presentation Rifle - CAMP PERRY, OHIO – If you ever woke up as a child on your birthday, rubbed the sleep from your eyes and walked into your living room to find a new bike with a ribbon on it, then you can relate to how a New Jersey teen felt when a pristine presentation grade M1 Garand rifle arrived on his doorstep after winning the 2008 John C. Garand Match handicap award.

My 1911 CMP Presentation Service Pistol - My .45-caliber automatic Service Pistol for EIC (Excellence-in-Competition) matches started life as a blued Colt MKIV/Series 70 Government Model that I bought new in 1982.

Unfired, I brought it to the legendary late Mr. Floyd Aikman, former New Jersey pistolsmith extraordinaire, for the gun to be ‘accurized’ and morphed into a CMP-approved .45-caliber match service pistol (CMP was called DCM back then). Floyd was not only a superb pistolsmith, but he was a champion shooter as well. His accomplishments included Open wins at Camp Perry, including the Citizens’ Service Pistol Trophy, the U.S. Military Police Corps Trophy and National Trophy Individual (twice). As a pistolsmith, he is credited with designing and building his own Free Pistol, whose design was arguably superior to the European Free Pistol designs of the mid 1980s.

CMP Seeking Volunteer Range Officers for New CMP Competition Centers. The new 80-point indoor air gun ranges that the CMP built this year at Camp Perry, Ohio and Anniston, Alabama are already hosting air rifle and air pistol matches. The Camp Perry Center, which has electronic targets, hosted the 2008 National Matches Air Gun Events in July and August that attracted 425 individual participants. Ten different air rifle and air pistol matches for juniors and open competitors are now scheduled to take place at the Camp Perry Center in October, November, January, February, March and April. The Anniston Center hosted the 2008 National Junior Olympic Championship and is also developing a busy competition schedule for the coming month. It is slated to install electronic targets in the spring of 2009. Match schedules beyond the spring of 2009 have not yet been determined, but a full year-around calendar of competitions is certain at both locations. To conduct these matches for what is expected to be a growing group of competitors, the CMP is recruiting and will train a team of volunteer range officers and match officials who are available to serve during those matches. Volunteers at either site should live within commuting distance of either Camp Perry or Anniston. Prior experience as a range officer of match official is not necessary. Enough volunteers will be trained so that flexible scheduling is possible. The CMP staff will provide training, match official certification and mentoring. Serving as a competition official is a challenging, but also very rewarding experience. If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a match official at Camp Perry, contact Vicki Donoho at vdonoho@odcmp.com or 419-635-2141, ext. 1102. If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a match official at Anniston, contact James Hall at jhall@odcmp.com or 256-835-3527, ext. 1145.

National Rankings for As-Issued Military Rifle Matches. Joseph Yaw of New Concord, Ohio currently ranks as the number one shooter in the country in CMP Games Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches according to National Rankings released by the CMP this week. CMP National Rankings are weighted averages (national and regional CMP Games scores count more) of scores fired by shooters over the last two years in CMP-sanctioned Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches. The new GSM National Rankings can be found by going to the CMP Competitor Tracker homepage at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi. Then open the “National Ranking” dropdown bar at the top of the page. The rank list shows the current top 100. Click on the “+” to the left of each shooter’s name to see the matches and scores that are factored into their current ranking. Yaw, for example fired a 283-7X to place 3rd in the 2008 National Springfield Match, a 286-3X to place 4th in the 2008 National Garand Match and a 289-4X to finish 3rd in the 2007 Garand Match. Shooters who currently rank in the top five are Christopher Roberts, Charlotte NC: Richard Crawford, Kilgore TX; Sean Leighton, Mechanicsburg PA and John Friguglietti, Lincolnton NC. National Rankings are readjusted each time new scores from sanctioned matches are reported to CMP. If you made the top 100, congratulations! If you did not, shooting in more matches to get your average in Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches up so you can make the top 100 is a worthy goal.
