Can you get too much sleap before shooting?

Post by Jordan F. »

Is it possible to get too much sleap before shooting? I have noticed over the past month or so when I get a really good sleep (10 hours) I don't shoot all that great. My mind is almost too awake that I have trouble keeping my thoughts on shooting and my mind tend to wanders. On the other hand when I get 8.5 - 9 hours or so of sleep my mind tends to stay more on shooting and I seem to be more relaxed.

Has anybody else noticed this or is this just me? I understand most of you probably don't get nearly as much sleep but what is generally the optimum ammount of sleeping before you shoot the next day?

Thanks!

You should try to get the same amount of sleep the night before a match as you do every other day of the week.

If you get too much or too little, it is essentially throwing you out of your normal rhythm.

i think it is good for you to sleep slightly lesser than usual before a competition.

sleeping too much can actually make one become more sleepy, which is not good for shooting, obviously.

sleeping too little have the same effect as above.

however, from experience, sleeping around 1 hr lesser than usual do make you feel more alert when shooting.

The only problem I can see with having too much sleep before a match is failing to wake up... ...at all!

Every day that you wake up to go shooting must be a good day.

I never sleep well before a match. I am always afraid that either the alarm won't go off, or I will sleep through it. I usually get 6.5 hours of sleep the night before the first day due to traveling, and 7.5 the night before the second day...both nights are a bit fitful...

I agree totally with the last poster. I sleep fitfully the night before a match and dont do much better the next night if the match is a two or three day affair. A light breakfast and some warm up exercises seem to work best. By the way, I am not a GURU, and the best reference I can recomend for a shooter at any level is the Bible, [The USAMU publication available from CMP or the AMU] IMHO there is no better training and shooting reference for pistol shooting outside some of the documentation that has come out of the Soviet Union. I know that I cannot even come close to the perfection in that writing. I humble admit that I wrote most of the chapter describing what I was allowed to call sustained fire But the revision is much improved over my orriginal efforts. Good Shooting Bill Horton
