Tamas, Callahan and Turner are in the Lead

FT. BENNING, Ga. (May 13, 2008) – The first day of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting (Smallbore) concluded today with Tom Tamas (Columbus, Ga.) in the lead for Men’s Prone Rifle, while Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.) and Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) are on top in pistol.
In Men’s Prone Rifle, two-time Olympian Tamas, as well as Eric Uptagrafft (Spokane, Wash.), a 1996 Olympian, each finished the qualification round with 599 points. At the end of the final, Tamas, Uptagrafft and three-time Olympian Mike Anti (Winterville, N.C.) were all tied for first place with 702.4 points. Tamas and Anti both shot 10.7 in the first shoot-off, while Uptagrafft shot a 10.3. In the second shoot-off, Tamas and Anti both fired a 10.5, but in the third shoot-off, Tamas shot a 10.6 to Anti’s 10.0, to take the top spot going into the second day of competition. Anti is in second place and Uptagrafft is holding third place. Tamas, Anti and Uptagrafft are all members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU).
USAMU member Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.), a two-time Olympian and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team member in Men’s Air Rifle, is in fourth place in Men’s Prone with 699.9 points. Parker’s USAMU teammate David Sprecher (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) is right behind Parker in fifth place with 699.6 points and Matthew Wallace (Fairbanks, Alaska) is holding the sixth spot with a score of 698.7.
USAMU members Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), the 2008 Beijing World Cup bronze medalist, and Glenn Sulser (Burlington, Wis.) are in seventh and eighth places respectively with 697.6 and 695.7.
Three-time Olympian Callahan, who is looking to secure a spot on her fourth U.S. Olympic Team, is holding first place in Women’s Sport Pistol going into the second day of competition with a total score of 980.6. Sandra Uptagrafft (Los Angeles, Calif.), the 2007 Pan American Games gold medalist in Women’s Sport Pistol, is in second place with 978.4 points. Three-time Olympian Beki Snyder (Colorado Springs, Colo.), is holding third place with 974.0. Snyder is looking to secure a second spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, having already earned a spot in Women’s Air Rifle.
Vladimira Borisova (Elgin, Ill.) is in fourth place in Women’s Sport Pistol with 962.2 points and Elisabeta Nishica (Acworth, Ga.) is in fifth place with 961.6. Diana Nee (Arcadia, Calif.) is holding fifth place with 953.0, while Heather Deppe (San Antonio, Texas) and Brenda Shinn (Riverside, Calif.) are in the seventh and eighth spots with total scores of 947.0 and 939.0 respectively.
In Men’s Free Pistol, 2004 Olympian Turner, who has already earned a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Men’s Air Pistol, is holding the top spot with a score of 653.9. John Zurek (Chandler, Ariz.) is right behind Turner in second place with 653.7, while two-time Olympian and member of the USAMU, Daryl Szarenski (Saginaw, Mich.) is in third place with 648.6. Cody Owsley (Tonganoxie, Kan.) shot a score of 99.8 in the final, to finish in the fourth spot with 634.8. USAMU member Thomas Rose (Central Point, Ore.) is in fifth place with 634.1. Rich Gray (Fredericksburg, Va.) is holding sixth place with 632.8, while Jay Shi (Gilbert, Ariz.) is in seventh place with 628.7 and Anthony Lutz (Tonganoxie, Kan.) is in eighth with 622.3.
Over 170 top rifle and pistol shooters from around the United States are competing for spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting (Smallbore) May 12-22 at Ft. Benning's International Shooting Complex in Columbus, Ga., home of the U.S. Army Marksmanship (USAMU). The U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Shooting is a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Shooting.
In smallbore rifle, there is one U.S. Olympic team spot available for Men's Prone and Men's 3-Position (Matt Emmons has already secured a spot in both Prone and 3P) and there are two spots available in Women's 3-Position. In pistol, there are two U.S. Olympic team spots available for Men's Free Pistol and one spot in Men's Rapid Fire Pistol. There are two spots for Women's Sport Pistol.
The rifle/pistol athletes will be selected to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team based on a combination of the three days of match scores, plus each athlete’s top two finals scores.
