2008 National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Matches Programs Avail­able, On-Line Entry System Open - It’s hard to believe that the time to make plans for another National Matches is already here. The Official Program for the CMP National Trophy and CMP Games Matches that will take place this summer at Camp Perry, Ohio, is now posted on the CMP website and the CMP Competitor Tracker system is now open to receive on-line entries. Competitors who want to secure their places in this year’s matches can now do so.

Air Rifle Tournament at Winter­fest 2008 - On 1-3 February 2008 the Gatlinburg Convention Center in Gatlinburg, TN was converted into a rifle range for the Boy Scout Explorer and Venture Crews Win­terfest 2008. Winterfest is an exciting week­end focusing on competitive events for all Boy Scout Explorer Posts and Venture Crews, and this year the event drew over 2,600 participants. Of those, over 300 took part in an air rifle tournament that was set-up at the request of the Northeast Georgia Boy Scout Council and USA Shooting Man­ager of Youth and Coach Programs, Bob Foth.

OSUT Soldiers participate in marksmanship test - THE BAYONET (http://www.thebayonet.com/) By Brenda Donnell - The 198th Infantry Brigade is partnering with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in a test designed to give Soldiers a better marksmanship program. The Sol­diers and their drill sergeants, in week four of 14, are participating in a test that is combining combat marksmanship and traditional, known-distance marksmanship. They are combining that with instruction from four USAMU marksmanship instructors who are being assisted by six Civilian Marks­manship Program instructors. Howell Gun Club held Rimfire Sporter Clinic - The Howell Gun Club in Howell, MI held one of the first CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Clin­ics on Saturday, 15 March 2008. Eight families attended the Clinic, which was developed by CMP GSM Master Instructors Dave Dieball and Jeff Knop.



CMP Approved Clinic at Bell City Rifle Club - On 15-16 March 2008 the Bell City Rifle Club in Thomaston, CT held a GSM Clinic and 50-round training match. There was a strong turnout for the event with 15 and 5 juniors in attendance for the two-day course.



Highpower Getting in on the “Shoot-off” Fun - Reading Ri­fle and Revolver Club in Reading, MA will be adding some excitement to some of its competitions this year by adding “Shoot-Off’s,” also known as a Final.



Oak Ridge Sportsmen's Association Inaugural Carbine Match - The Oak Ridge Sportsmen's Association (ORSA) in Oak Ridge, TN recently conducted their first M1 Carbine Match. The event took place 2 March 2008, and had 16 competitors.



PSC Shooting Club in Friendswood, TX M-1 Rifle Pres­entation - Amid cheers, the tearing faces of mothers, sisters, and his wife, local citizens expressed the communities’ appreciation to Marine Cor­poral John Paul Schilling for his service in the Iraq War. The ceremony was conducted at the PSC Shooting Club in Friendswood where a vintage M-1 Garand rifle was presented to Iraq War veteran John Paul Schilling.


IN MEMORIAM--Dr. Nathan Arenson, from Pensacola, Flor­ida, a long-time leader of the bull's-eye pistol program in the USA, passed away on 2 April. Dr. Arenson earned his Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1966. He was a member of the NRA Board of Directors and Chairman of the NRA Pistol Committee for many years. He also was active in the conduct of the National Matches pistol competitions

CMP Eastern Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches - The second annual CMP Eastern Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches are set to take place at Camp Butner, NC on 3-11 May 2008. The event features both clinics and competitions and is hosted by North State Shooting Club (NSSC) and the North Carolina Army National Guard at Camp Butner, NC. Registration is now open and a complete 2008 Eastern Games Program can be found at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInf ... tchID=2950. Bushmaster Firearms has agreed to become an award sponsor for the Eastern CMP Games Special As-Issued M1 Garand EIC Match that will be fired at Camp Butner, North Carolina on Tuesday, 6 May. Bushmaster is providing a DCM-XR Series Competition Rifle to be awarded to the highest ranking competitor in this match who has earned no previous EIC points.



The Eastern U.S. Junior Highpower Clinic and Champi­onship will take place 22-27 June at Camp Butner, North Carolina. The Eastern U.S. Junior Highpower Clinic and Championship offers a full week of clinics, coaching and competition for junior service rifle competitors. Jun­iors attending the clinic will have the opportunity to expand their current level of experience and expertise as well as build friendships and camara­derie within the sport. CMP Master Instructor Courses to train CMP GSM (As-Issued Military Rifle: Garand-Springfield-Military Rifle) Master Instructors are now open for registration. The courses will be conducted on 2-3 May at Camp Butner, North Carolina; 21-22 June, Camp Perry, Ohio; 10-11 Oct, Phoe­nix, Arizona; and 8-9 Nov, Anniston, Alabama. These workshops are open to all experienced rifle marksmanship instructors and shooters who would like to receive advanced training and be certified as “Master Instruc­tors” to teach CMP-sanctioned Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Ri­fle Clinics at their home clubs.
