FORT BENNING, Ga. - Two Soldiers of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit took two medals in Day 2 of the USA Shooting Spring Selection Match at the Pool International Shooting Complex April 11.

Olympic champion Matthew Emmons of Fairbanks, Alaska, won the Gold Medal in the Men's Three-Position Free Rifle competition. USAMU international rifle shooter Sgt. 1st Class Jason A. Parker received the Silver Medal and Spc. Michael D. McPhail of the USAMU brought home the Bronze Medal. Emmons and Parker won the two slots to compete on the Pan-Am Team. However, since Emmons declined his slot because he is getting married to international rifle shooter Katie Kurkova of the Czech Republic and they will be on their honeymoon at the time, McPhail got Emmons' slot.

In the Women's Three-Position Sport Rifle match, new U.S. National Development Team member Amanda Furrer was the Gold Medal winner, followed by Jamie Beyerle of Lebanon, Pa., just 7/10ths of a point behind to take the Silver, and Sandra Fong of New York City who got the Bronze. Furrer and Beyerle won the Pan-Am Team slots.

Three members or former members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit took the first three medals of the selection matches April 10. Five-time Olympian John McNally, formerly of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, won the Gold Medal in the Men's Rapid Fire Pistol Competition. Former USAMU shooter Staff Sgt. Keith Sanderson took the Silver Medal and Staff Sgt. John C. Ennis of the Army Marksmanship Unit got the Bronze. McNally and Sanderson also won slots on the U.S. Pan-American Games Team.

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit is hosting the USA Shooting International Rifle and Pistol Spring Selection Match through April 15, which is the final selection match to choose the U.S. Rifle and Pistol Team for the 2007 Pan-American Games.

Beyerle, Emmons and Emily Caruso of Fairfield, Conn., secured their positions o¬n the 2007 U.S. Pan-American Games Rifle Team at the USA Shooting Top Gun Air Match, Dec. 1 to 3 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. U.S. Army Reservist Libby Callahan of Columbia, S.C., and Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Rose of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, took slots on the Pan-Am Pistol Team.

Parker was the runner-up at the Pan-American Games Air Rifle Selection Matches. His three day total was just shy of making the U.S. Team due to a change in qualification by the Pan-American Games Organizing Committee. The change notes that o¬nly o¬ne male shooter from the country can be sent to compete in the event.

At the USA Shooting Shotgun Fall Selection Match Sept. 6 to 13 in Kerrville, Texas, USAMU shotgun shooters Sgt. 1st Class Theresa E. DeWitt, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dulohery and Spc. Joshua M. Richmond won their matches and were in first place in the U.S. Team Selection process for the 2007 Pan-American Games. The final selection match for Shotgun will be May 8 to 20 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

The Pan-American Games will be conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 13 to 29. The Games include an Olympic-style shooting championship for the Western Hemisphere, which is conducted every four years. Not only can shooters win medals and set world records at the Pan-American Games, but the Pan-Am Games is the last chance for shooters from the Western Hemisphere to win quota slots for their countries to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The USA has earned 18 of a possible 28 Olympic quota slots up to now.
