World Cup USA To Welcome 62 Nations

Post by USA Shooting »

Over 500 Athletes To Ft. Benning, Ga., March 31 - April 8, 2007

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first rifle/pistol International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup of the season will be hosted by USA Shooting March 31 - April 8, 2007, in Ft. Benning, Ga. To date, 505 athletes from 62 nations have registered for 834 competition entries, to mark the largest shooting World Cup ever to be held on U.S. soil.

The best-of-the-best travel to World Cup competitions throughout the season, bringing the top finishers to the World Cup Finals later in the season. World Cup USA will feature Olympic medalists, international record holders and the top seeded shooters from each participating nation.

"This is the largest turnout we have ever experienced for the World Cup USA," noted Wanda Jewell, Director of Operations for USA Shooting and
1984 Olympic bronze medalist in rifle. "It will be a great competition field for our athletes. The biggest push will be for Olympic quota positions with more countries seeking to secure their place on the firing line for the 2008 Olympic Games."

Various international shooting events, including World Cup competitions, offer nations the opportunity to qualify their country for the Olympic Games by earning Olympic "quota" slots through outstanding performances.
World Cup USA will afford a chance for shooters to earn those positions in all of the Olympic disciplines. To date, the USA has earned 17 of a possible 28 Olympic quota slots.

What is it 2 or 3 per event plus those shooting the MQS, so I wouldn't think that many.

There is usually a list of entrants by nation on the competition website. I think it may be 3 competitors (because GB have 3 prone rifle shooters going), and the MQS's. I'm sure if someone wanted to dig about in the ISSF rules, it will be detailed therein.

<edit> Just checked the official website and there's nothing there yet.
