USA Shooting To Launch
New Web Site In 2007

The online community has spoken, and here at USA Shooting we are listening. In an effort to better serve our membership, the online home of the organization is receiving an overhaul.

Thanks to one of our generous donors, www.usashooting.org will see significant changes from the ease of navigation to fewer downloads to a new online store and daily updates that will help bring you the newest information and features that appeal to all shooters.

Additionally, USA Shooting members will have exclusive online access to a new system that allows you to login and update your personal information, renew your annual membership online and even print your own identification card from your personal computer!

Be sure to visit www.usashooting.org throughout the first quarter of 2007 to watch as the changes unfold.

NOTE: Due to recent technical difficulties, the USA Shooting web site will experience a brief outage for maintenance. Dates for the web site update will be sent directly to online members once they become available. Thank you for your patience as we correct the problem. The new web site launch will be announced once final dates are secured.

If you require immediate attention, please e-mail media@usashooting.org to get an answer to your specific question(s) or call 719/866-4670.

ISSF Officials Training Course

Organized by USA Shooting, an International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) Officials Training Course will take place Dec. 8-12, 2006, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The chief instructor is ISSF Vice President Mr. Gary Anderson, a Class A judge and Technical Delegate for the 2000 Olympic Games. He will be joined by USA Shooting Director of Operations, Wanda Jewell, an ISSF Class B Judge; shotgun instructor Rod Jenneiahn, an ISSF Class A Judge and a member of the ISSF judges committee; and Susan Abbott, ISSF Class A Judge and Chairperson of the ISSF Pistol Committee.

The session covers general topics for rifle, pistol and shotgun, but breaks down discipline specific details as well. There will also be an electronic target scoring course and a shotgun referee's course.

Sanctioned by ISSF and USA Shooting, the course is not intended to teach the rules of the sport, but to confirm the "proper understanding" of officiating competitions and adjudicating protests. Successful completion of the course examination may lead to certification as an ISSF B Judge, USAS Level II Official, Shotgun Referee and/or license for the electronic target scoring.

While registration is closed, additional information on future opportunities can be obtained by calling USA Shooting at 719/866-4670.

Air Rifle & Pistol Athletes Selected
For 2007 Pan American Games

Dec. 1 - 3, 2006, USA Shooting hosted the 2006 3X Air Match in Colorado Springs, Colo., naming six athletes to the U.S. Pan American Games Team that will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2007.

The three-day event drew nearly 200 athletes to the U.S. Olympic Shooting Center, where shooters took part in identical daily competitions in air rifle and air pistol with finals closing out each day. An aggregate of scores were tallied to determine the top competitors that will join the U.S. Pan Am delegation.

In pistol, Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.), a three-time Olympian and U.S. Army Reservist, and Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Rose (Central Point, Ore./pictured above right), a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), took the top step on the medals stand for women and men, respectively. Callahan will be joined on the Pan Am Pistol Team in Brazil by Teresa Meyer (Dearborn, Mich.).

Set on the final day of the competition, Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.), a 2004 U.S. Olympian, and Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) will travel with Olympic gold medalist Matt Emmons (Fairbanks, Alaska) to Rio as part of the air rifle squad.

Remaining disciplines will be selected at the respective 2007 spring selection matches.

Here are a few highlights from the competition, including two record breaking moments:

2004 Olympian Emily Caruso (pictured right) shot a perfect 400 in Saturday's preliminary rounds to etch her name into shooting history. She joins only two other U.S. female shooters to earn the distinction, first accomplished in 1993. Caruso's score was the first for a U.S. athlete since 2000.

Among the few international guests invited to participate, Katy Kurkova of the Czech Republic not only earned the high visitor award on all three days of the competition, but was the women's day one and day three champion.

Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) and Heather Deppe (San Antonio, Texas) both won two junior titles during the event, and subsequently finished third in the open standings on both occasions.

Tim Sherry (Littleton, Colo./pictured left), 12, twice captured the J3 National Record. Shooting a 581 on day one, Sherry beat the previous record of 579 set in 2005. He returned on day two to up his own mark by two points for a 583.
