Soldiers vie for slots on Pan-Am Team

FORT BENNING, Ga. - Soldiers of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit are training and preparing for the selection match that will choose the U.S.
Team that will compete at the 2007 Pan-American Games.

Army Marksmanship Unit international rifle and pistol shooters will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov.
30 to compete in the USA Shooting Top Gun Competition that will determine who will shoot Air Rifle and Air Pistol at the Pan-Am Games.
One female and four male rifle shooters and six male pistol shooters from the USAMU will be vying for eight slots on the U.S. Team at the competition that runs Dec. 1 to 3. The rest of the Rifle and Pistol Pan-Am Team will be chosen at the USA Shooting Spring Selection Match in April here on post.

Two USAMU shotgun shooters are already halfway to the Pan-American Games. At the USA Shooting Fall Selection Match Sept. 6 to 13 in Kerrville, Texas, USAMU shotgun shooter Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dulohery won the Men's Open Skeet Match and Spc. Joshua M. Richmond dominated in the Men's Open Double Trap Match. The Soldiers are currently in first place in the U.S. Team Selection process for the Pan-American Games as well as the 2007 World Clay Target Championships.

This match was the first Selection Match to choose the Shotgun Pan-Am Team. The second and final selection match will be conducted in March in Kerrville.

The Pan-American Games will be conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July
13 to 29. The Games include an Olympic-style shooting championship for
the Western Hemisphere, which is conducted every four years. Not only can shooters win medals and set world records at the Pan-American Games, but the Pan-Am Games is the last chance for shooters from the Western Hemisphere to win quota slots for their countries to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Eisenhower to raise the standards of marksmanship throughout the U.S. Army, the Army Marksmanship Unit is assigned to the Accessions Support Brigade of the U.S. Army Accessions Command.
