Three-Position Air Rifle Rule Changes - The National Three-Position Air Rifle Council will soon release the 2006-2008 National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rules that govern position air rifle shooting in the United States. The new rulebook will be available both on the CMP web site and in printed form before the end of September. The new rules incorporate several rule changes that were approved by the Council during its annual meeting last July. This article summarizes those changes.

Better Performance Through Proper Nutrition By CPL Walter Craig, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit - There is one trait common to all champions, regardless of the sport they choose to compete in. This trait is an overwhelming and all consuming desire to succeed. Their desire is so great they will let nothing stand in their way. They find satisfaction in performing to the best of their ability and in mastering their body and mind like no one else has ever done. One of the first steps in helping any athlete perform their best is developing an optimal nutritional plan.

In Memoriam—CWO Coats Brown, USA (Ret.). The Military Marksmanship Association recently announced the death of its oldest member and one of the original soldiers assigned to the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit. CWO Coats Brown passed away on 1 September at the age of 96. In 1939, then Sergeant Coats Brown earned his Distinguished Rifleman Badge. That same year, he won the National Trophy Individual Rifle Match (Daniel Boone Trophy) at the National Matches. When the Army Marksmanship Unit was formed in 1956, Brown became the first Head Coach of the Army Service Rifle Team. He was a veteran of WWII and retired from the Army with over 30 years of service. He was subsequently employed by USAMU for 17 years as a graphics illustrator. In 1994, CWO Coats Brown was one of the six original USAMU members who were inducted into the USAMU Hall of Fame.
Job Announcement—CMP Program Manager. The CMP will continue to accept resumes submitted in application for the position of Program Manager until 29 September 2006. The new Program Manager, who is expected to be hired this fall, will work as a member of the CMP staff at Camp Perry. CMP program managers report to the DCM and are responsible for planning, organizing, promoting and conducting specific CMP programs under the direction of the DCM and CMP Board of Directors. This position will be responsible for programs that include the Garand-Springfield-Military Rifle Clinic Program (GSM), Regional CMP Games, National Match operations and CMP rules coordination. The person selected to fill this position should have a bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university together with extensive experience as a shooting sports instructor, coach, match official and competitive shooter. Experience in making effective written and oral communications is essential; management experience in other fields is also relevant. Qualified individuals who are interested in applying for this challenging position may submit resumes and/or request a detailed job description by contacting Kathy Williams at kwilliams@odcmp.com.
Job Announcement—CMP Corporate Inspector General. The CMP Audit Committee is seeking applications for the part-time position of Corporate Inspector General. Applicants should have prior top level management, business or military experience; a knowledge of marksmanship and competitive shooting, experience in working with a board of directors and a knowledge of finance, general auditing and internal auditing procedures. SDM Military Rifle Instructor Training. 52 new CMP Military Rifle Instructors were recently trained by the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Rifle Team to prepare them to support USAMU Squad Designated Marksmen Instructor Training Courses taught by USAMU instructors. The training, which included both classroom and range firing exercises with SDM rifles, took place at Camp Perry, Ohio on 15-17 August. During the current fiscal year, the original group of 43 civilian volunteer Military Rifle Instructors assisted USAMU instructors in conducting 13 SDM Instructor Courses that trained 484 soldiers. The members of this original group of instructors, who were trained in August 2005, and the new Military Rifle Instructors who were just trained will now be scheduled to support USAMU SDM Instructor Courses that will take place at various military installations throughout the next fiscal year.
2007 National Matches and Camp Perry Centennial. Competitors who want to start planning for the 2007 National Matches will find the 2007 National Match calendar posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/NationalMatches.htm. The CMP does not anticipate that there will be any changes in these published dates prior to the 2007 National Matches so competitors who need to plan their 2007 schedules and vacations far in advance should be able to use these dates to make 2007 plans. Competitors who are thinking about attending the 2007 National Matches should also note that next year marks the 100th anniversary of the first National Matches that were held at Camp Perry. The CMP on-line entry system is expected to open by mid-March to take 2007 National Matches entries.
