Marine Corps JROTC Rifle Team Given a Taste of the National Matches - MSgt Gerald Lyons knows a thing or two about coaching champions. He has led his Shelby County High School Marine Corps JROTC Rifle Team from Shelbyville, Kentucky to victory in the JROTC National Championship three out of the last four years. That is why it was a special reward when Dr. Bill McHenry, Director of the Marine Corps JROTC Program, invited the Shelby County MCJROTC unit to send a four-member team and an instructor to attend the 2006 National Matches at Camp Perry as a reward for winning this year’s JROTC National Championship.

CMP Springfield/Vintage and John C. Garand Match Presentation Rifles were provided by the CMP and were beautifully gunsmithed by Eric Pierce of the National Match Armory in Rendon, Texas. The Springfield, Vintage Military Rifle and Garand Matches are unique for their emphasis on participation and not on winning. The most important prizes in these matches are awarded for participation. In this spirit, the two presentation rifles for these matches are awarded to shooters whose names were drawn from each relay’s competitors to have their rifles inspected. The names of every competitor whose rifle passed inspection were then placed in these drawings. The winner of the 2006 Springfield/Vintage Military Match presentation rifle was Kevin Winkler, Menomonee Falls, WI. The winner of the 2006 Garand Match presentation rifle was Daniel Sullivan of Dublin Ohio.
