LTG Blum Opens the 2006 National Matches - On 10 July 2006, National Match competitors, offi­cials, staff, volunteers and visitors gathered on Rodriguez Range for the Annual First Shot Ceremony. The First Shot Ceremony is the traditional open­ing for the National Matches. Lieuten­ant General H Steven Blum, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, had the honor of being the 2006 First Shot Speaker.

Inaugural M9 EIC Match a Big Success - The U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit Pistol Team, with support from members of the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and All-Guard Pistol teams, conducted a very suc­cessful 2006 Pistol Small Arms Firing School at Camp Perry earlier this week. 376 students checked in for the school and inaugural M9 Pistol EIC Match that is part of the school. This is the largest Pistol Small Arms Firing School in decades.

New CMP National Matches Art Poster Available - The CMP has just received a new, original painting produced by Jerry Antolik, a nationally known and awarded artist from Wyoming. The new painting depicts a familiar scene to most Camp Perry shooters and volunteers. It shows a National Matches range engineering staff member driving a tractor and trailer with 1000 yard targets, in the midst of Camp Perry’s ubiquitous sea gulls, in front of one of Camp Perry’s most recognizable landmarks, its main water tower.

Nebraska’s Jochum is Pacesetter in National Guard Bu­reau Junior Championship - In what could turn out to be the Na­tional Guard Bureau’s last National Junior Air Rifle Tournament, 16-year-old Michaela Jochum from Beatrice, Nebraska turned in a dominating perform­ance to win the individual sporter class championship by 44 points and lead her team, the Homestead 4-H Shooting Club, to the sporter class team championship.

2006 Western CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches Now Open for Entries - Shooters who plan to participate in the 2006 3rd Western CMP Games Garand, Springfield and Military Rifle Matches or in the 2006 Creedmoor Cup Match may now submit their entries and reserve entry spaces in what has already become the biggest rifle com­petition in the Western United States.

USMC Weapons Training Battalion Change of Command. Colonel Mike Mulligan took over as the new Commander of the U. S. Marine Corps Weapons Training Battalion in a Change of Command Ceremony that took place at Quantico MCB, Virginia on 6 July. Col. Mulligan succeeds Col. Mark Brilakis who has been the USMC WTBN Commander for the past three years. Marine Corps Rifle & Pistol Teams are part of the WTBN. Col. Brilakis is moving to a new assignment as the Chief, USMC European Liaison Office, The Pentagon.



2006 National Match Rifle Raffle. The CMP will again offer National Match competitors and visitors a chance to purchase raffle tickets to win one of three raffle rifles, a Russian running target scope or a case of Greek .30-06 ammo (1,320 rds). Rifles for the 2006 raffle include an IHC Garand, Remington 541X (new in box) and a Kimber 82. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each and each ticket purchased is eligible to be drawn for any of the five prizes. Tickets can be purchased at CMP Headquarters, National Matches In-Processing and the CMP Store. The drawing will be held Saturday, August 5th at the National Trophy Rifle Matches Festival closing.



2006 Camp Perry Retired Marines Junior Dinner. Camp Perry Retired Marines Association will again hold a dinner for juniors at the VFW hall in Port Clinton, OH on Wednesday, 2 August at 7:00 p.m. Over $3,000.00 in door prizes will be given to the junior teams at the dinner. The door prizes are shooting equipment that the teams can use in their programs. 2006 MBA Rifle Classic. The tenth annual MBA Rifle Classic will be held in Nashville, Tennessee over the weekend of 15-17 October. The Classic was initiated in 1995 to provide a premier season opening competition for high school rifle teams. It has grown each year, and is now the largest high school sponsored shooting event in the U.S. Last year 51 high schools from 11 states participated and 308 athletes tested their shooting skills. Rimfire Sporter Match. Entries in the CMP’s National Rimfire Sporter Match continue to come in. This year’s match will be on Sunday, 23 July. There will be a clinic on Saturday afternoon, 22 July and match day will conclude with a cookout hosted by CMP staff.
