Never Out of Sight - Morgan Hicks is no stranger to big competition. In 2004 she was the NCAA Smallbore Champion and an Olympian at the Athens Games. But the Olympics were the last event she fired until the World Championship Try-Outs at Fort Benning, GA in April 2006. For even a seasoned veteran like Hicks, nearly two years could seem like an overwhelming lay-off to return from.

Reading Rifle & Revolver Club, Massachusetts Junior Highpower Clinic - Submitted By Maureen Trickett, CMP Junior Director MA

On April 22, 2006, Reading Rifle and Revolver in Reading, MA hosted a Junior Highpower Clinic. Registration was interesting; I had more phone calls from adults who wanted to take the clinic than I had juniors. I even had one who wanted to know if I could push the age up to 28 to qualify as a junior so he could attend.

I did not have to worry though about filling the junior slots, all 40 filled very quickly. All in all, I was really impressed that there was that much interest by both juniors and adults for the highpower sport. We were also very lucky that Nashua Fish & Game Assoc., Merrimack, NH, was running a clinic the same weekend that I could refer the adults rather than flatly turning them down.

George “Dad” Farr the legendary namesake of the Farr Trophy was featured in the April issue of Precision Sports magazine. Farr is known for his stunning performance in the 1921 National Matches when he shot an incredible 71 bullseyes falling one shot shy of renowned Marine Sergeant John W. Adkins in the Wimbledon Cup. 62-year-old Farr was an unheard of shooter when he made his first and only trip to the National Matches in 1921, but he left a legend. 2006 Eastern United States Junior Highpower Clinic and Championship will take place 25 June through 30 June 2006 at the North Carolina National Guard Training Site at Camp Butner. Experienced coaches and instructors from the United States Marine Corps Rifle Team and the Army National Guard “All Guard” Rifle Team will be conducting clinics for both new and experienced junior shooters. Instruction in both shooting individual matches and shooting as a member of a coached team will also be provided. This week long program is offered to provide junior shooters an opportunity to expand their current level of knowledge, experience and expertise. It is also an opportunity for junior shooters to come together to experience the each other’s company and to form bonds of friendship and camaraderie within the sport. Shooting Tips from the USAMU Rifle Team - The U. S. Army Service Rifle Team and the CMP have teamed up to provide our First Shot readers with an opportunity to submit their questions on highpower/service rifle shooting and get answers from some of the greatest shooters and coaches in the country. If you have questions about highpower rifle shooting techniques or equipment, send them to USAMU@odcmp.com and a USAMU shooter or coach will answer it. USAMU shooters and coaches also have agreed to provide periodic articles on highpower and service rifle shooting that the CMP will post, together with selected questions and answers, in the CMP’s on-line magazine, The First Shot.

CMP ROTC Scholarships Announced for 2006-2007. The CMP is privileged to announce the awarding of 100 college scholarships to deserving college students who excelled academically and in their rifle marksmanship activities. Scholarship recipients must enroll in ROTC during the 2006-2007 college year. Each year the CMP awards up to 100 $1,000 scholarships in cooperation with the U.S. Army Cadet Command, the U.S. Marine Corps Training and Education Command and the U.S. Navy Education and Training Command. 2006 National Matches and Small Arms Firing Schools. Entries for the 2006 National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches, the Pistol and Rifle Small Arms Firing Schools and the National Rimfire Sporter Match continue to come in at a fast pace. To date, over 1,500 individual shooters have entered the CMP highpower rifle events that include the John C. Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle matches, the President’s and National Trophy Individual Rifle Matches and two new National Trophy Rifle Matches, the Hearst Doubles and M1 Carbine Matches. Pistol entries are now well over 200 while Rimfire Sporter entries are at 131. Entry in the Pistol Small Arms Firing School includes entry in a new M9 EIC Match. Entry in the Rifle Small Arms Firing School includes entry in the M16 Rifle EIC Match. Range capacities were increased this year and plenty of entry spaces are still available, but some rifle matches are still likely to fill up. National Youth Leadership Conference Dates Set. Dates are now set for the 2006 National Youth Leadership Conference that will be hosted by the CMP at Camp Perry. The conference will open on Friday, 22 September and end on Sunday, 24 September. The CMP State Junior Directors Workshop will take place on Sunday afternoon, 24 September. CMP/NRA/USAS coach schools for rifle and pistol will be offered on 19-21 September preceding the conference. The National Youth Leadership Conference is designed to update junior leaders of all types about current program developments and to educate them on topics that will benefit their junior shooting leadership activities. Put these dates on the calendar. The official program will be released and posted on the CMP web site in a few days when on-line entries will also open.

CMP South Store Opening 1 June 2006. The CMP South store will open for business on 1 June 2006. The store is located in the CMP Distribution Center at 3016 Red Morris Parkway, Anniston, AL 36207. Hours of operation will be Wed - Sat 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM CST. Only the same items that are available at the North store will be available at the South store. Because many of the CMP South personnel will be at Camp Perry in support of the National Matches, the South store will be closed 30 July-15 August and will reopen for business on 16 August.
