I just received notice of this. This is terrible! We need to write to Air Canada and let them know how disappointed we are to find this surcharge.

Westjet does not have this charge.

Better yet, DON'T fly Air Canada. Fly with someone else or drive.

Then send the ticket stub or receipt showing the fare spent on someone else's airline to Air Canada's CEO. Do that each and every time you fly.

It's hard to get to Europe from Canada by car. Due to the great American Form 6 it's next to impossible to fly a US carrier to Europe because they all connect in the States and you can't get a permit to allow your firearms to transit the US. So your suggestion really doesn't work. As for flying within Canada I don't think hardly anyone uses them now as their fares are always the highest and Westjet is way more firearm friend ly and cheaper to boot.

Just a guess but I suspect British Airways flies into Canada as do a lot of other airlines. Pick one of those that doesn't surcharge.

Question seeing as all the BA flights connect in London and England is so firearm friendly what if any problems are there transiting England with firearms?

Nightmare, especially with pistols which would need to remain airside.

If you want to go elsewhere in Europe then we are not short of airlines on this side of the Atlantic. A very quick check on the www shows KLM, Swiss, Air France & Lufthansa offering direct flights from Canada to Amsterdam, Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt respectively. I am sure there will be others.

I don't know how they stack up on price and routes but there are certainly alternatives to Air Canada.

Lufthansa is actually Air Canada on this side, they are Star Alliance so I don't know how the fees would be handled. Once one starts getting away with I can see the others following suit.

How often do you go there?

In the UK some of our budget airlines surcharge, some refuse to carry firearms. I would however do my best to find non surcharging alternatives as long as the overall price didn't become too expensive.
