I own a tanner/hammerli 300 m match rifle that I bought at a price I couldn´t refuse.

the caliber is 7.5 swiss, and I cant find any brass to reload for it, is it advisable to rechamber it to shoot the .308 win. I know the bore is the same but I dont know if the twist is the same, and mostly is it worth the trouble?
a gunsmith told me it is a very straight forrward job but its the first rifle of this kind he has ever seen. and I worry of the outcome. although he has made me up a pair of remington 700 target rifles with good results.

the barrel is 29.5 inches long and very heavy with peep sights. so cutting down half an inch should do the trick.

any advise is welcome.

DON'T DO IT!

the 7.5 case is fatter than the .308 so you can't just rechamber, you'd have to cut it back 2" or more and cut a new chamber and there may or may not be enough room to work with.

you can make 7.5x55 out of 284 winch brass

you can buy (in the US anyway) surplus but expensive, swiss 7.5, and if you can find berdan primers, reload that, (I do)

about once a year, Graf's runs a batch of boxer 7.5 brass and there was some portuguese ammo on the market in recent years.

I bought a Swiss K31 and it also shoots the 7.5x55. I bought some of the Grafs brass and it seems to be very good. I go that route. With all the K31's that are being sold these days I figure the brass will be more common.

the trouble is that I´m in old mexico and there is no way for me to get the brass from graffs..

Wolf Ammo now has 7.5 Swiss loaded ammunition available. It is supposed to be from their higher quality product line. I have some samples but have not had a chance to test. It is boxer primed and has gilding metal jacketed bullet unlike the GP11 Swiss ammo that is commonly found here in the USA which is steel jacketed.

I have 7.5 Swiss brass from both Norma and Graf & Sons. The Norma is excellent quality but expensive, the Graf & Sons is priced right but is of substantially lower quality in terms of uniformity, etc.

The true use for the Tanner rifles is to shoot at 300 Meters and for that they are one of the best in the World. The head diameter of the 7.5 Swiss round is also larger than the .308 so that is another reason to not try to rechamber it. Whatever value your rifles has now would be diminished substantially by rechambering.
