USA Shooting have recently posted updated national rankings over on their improved website...check it out! I think it's an excellent idea and I'd like to see it expanded to cover the non-olympic disciplines as well. It provides a little extra incentive to train a bit harder [ok, in my case it's gonna take a lot harder :^)] to bring up those scores... It might also provide a little more incentive for some shooters to participate in more USAS sanctioned matches in order to become ranked. Good job, USAS!

Well, it sounds nice - it sounded nice last time it was mentioned, but for whatever reason, I can't d/l a single file or review any on line at their site any longer. It's probably just me and my use of older s/w, but I still find it annoying that web designers keep finding new ways to make things difficult. I suppose this means I won't be able to get ahold of new rules when posted, either. So much for their "improved website" from my vantage...

The preceeding rant should in no way be considered a flame toward Lee Jr! On the contrary, I'm glad he is able to use their new site and is pleased with the material. I too, think the new site "looks" good. I'm merely annoyed that I can no longer use it for any gainful purpose.

Is it possible to have additional information about Top 10 USA Olympic Style Shooters in each discipline with State, Shooting Club, and Coach Information?

I have no problems opening their files.

But I do wonder about their rankings proceedures.

Past rankings, although not updated frequently, had more shooters listed.

It looks like they are only listing shooters who shoot USAS matches frequently.

There are several shooters I know of that are not on their rankings who competed at the Junior Olympics. A qualification match and 2 matches at the JO should be enough for them to list as an average.

According to the information at the top of the ranking page, the rankings will run o­ne full quarter behind "to ensure all scores are received and entered." Since the JO were in Sept, I imagine those shooters will show up in the March update. It also lists the minimum shots needed before they will rank the shooter, which if I remember correctly is 3 times the amount shot in that discipline.

I am glad that they updated, it was neglected for a long time. I am not so sure about the list criteria though. I wish they used the last x number of matches or shots. I did well in air, 8th I think, but fell off the list on Free because I didn't go to the Nationals this year and there aren't many USAS competition around. I fired a lot of Free but it was NRA and State games. It doesnt look like they have too many AMU shooters on the list for the same reason.

The reason that the rankings were not updated for so long (according to Mary Smith) is that competitions lost their database and had to manually reenter the scores. They do intend to keep it updated, now that things are back together. It is a disturbing barometer of the minimal participation in the NGB and its matches. Before my forced hiatus, when the list was first out, I sold quite a few memberships to local shooters that wanted to see their names on the list. The list was meant to encourage participation, more than anything else. It does that.

Bruce – sorry that you don't have more USAS opportunity in your area. Of course you can run matches yourself. USAS has a zone and regional match program where they even provide the medals. They also sanction state championships, but unlike the NRA they don't provide a certificate for the winner. Maybe we can get that changed in the future. One other advantages of USAS sanctioning over NRA, beyond national ranking, national visibility, and support of our NGB, is that you can honcho the match and shoot it too. That would be problematic for rapid fire, but free and air work okay.
